Usually use Norwegian formula stuff if my hands get dry, but with all the extra hand washing at the moment the back of my hands are red raw and knuckles are splitting.

So where else to ask advice apart from all you ruffty tuffty metrosexuals?

What do we know?

I must have tried every hand cream on the market, from stupidly expensive to rock bottom. The best for me is Palmers Cocoa Butter Formula with vitamin E.

There are loads of different ones but I go for the concentrated cream.

Great absorption, smells nice and non greasy (the last point is massively important to me, and where most others fall down).

The worst one I tried was O’Keeffe’s Working Hands , lots of people swear by it, but for me it was horrendous. Like rubbing fat into my hands.

Aveeno all the way. Nothing else cuts it for me. Not tried the shea butter variant, I just use the green one.

The Body Shop Hemp hand cream sorted my hand right out after they were that dry my thumbs cracked open.

Any superglue to weld the hacks, Norwegian white tube for me and O'Keefe's as a barrier

A good dollop of E45 cream rubbed in and a pair of socks worn as gloves for a few hours or over night

I'm an NHS worker so waking hands constantly and the sore, chapped hands is nothing new. I've tried endless hand creams, I've found the Avon argon oil one to be pretty good but to counter the comment above, found O'Keefes working hands to be excellent! (sorry pik n mix!) Not greasy if applied in relatively small amounts but very effective.

The most important thing is to apply it often enough. If you can get hold of latex or similar gloves, put a pair on and squirt a load of cream in and leave it for an hour or so.

Our kids hands are butchered from it (think they must have some cheap nasty soap at school). Made the mistake of getting some Norwegian formula stuff, put it on in the car in the supermarket car park. 10 seconds later the screaming began.....
So yeah, don't use that stuff on kids!

Aveeno for regular use. If you can find some of the climb on bar (not cream) then that is great for overnight use.

The wife's best stuff usually woks.
Although she has just bought a big tub of E45 for the house. She's thinking ahead.
Is is like having bairns with all the shitty nappies again.

You can get a water based moisturiser from the chemist looks a bit industrial, Aveeno is good off the shelf. I suffer from eczema and use hydrocortisone when it gets bad.

sorry pik n mix

Don’t be, if I even eat one crisp I have to wash my hands as I’m very sensitive to anything greasy on them. Loads of people swear by working hands so they can’t all be wrong.

The body shop hemp stuff isn’t too bad, the original was better, but it has an interesting smell to it if that bothers you.

(I possibly have issues with hand cream that aren’t issues for other people).

Another o’keefes recommendation here. Had cracks in fingers and peeling skin for years-it’s made a big difference,

Another vote for Palmers.

The glove trick works as well, even just wearing them with nothing on seems to moisturise to a degree.

I tend to slather my hands at night, yesterday mine were cracked and actually bleeding, they are mostly fine now, still cracked but the skin underneath has been sorted.

Chaps - are your hands becoming dry due to a product that you're using at home?

No, mine have been dry and fingertips crack easily for years. I'm a desk worker so it's not as if I'm doing lots of manual work.

OK. I was going to suggest that perhaps adding a little glycerine to any liquid soap would help, particularly if those anti-bacterial types are being used. Not sure if that would negate its properties somewhat though.

Thanks for the suggestion- will be worth a try if the O'keeffe's loses its magic!
