Thinking bands that have appeared in the last 5 years or so.
Frank Turner is playing Wembley Arena soon.
Taylor Swift, though possibly not in this country....
I'm talking stadiums i.e. 50,000 plus folk, not the 23,000 etc that the arenas hold.
Elbow. Damn near sold out all three nights at the O2.
Elbow have been around for years (mid 90's?), admittedly mainstream success has been a recent thing, but still not a new band.
I think that with the internet being so accessible and the cynicism brought about by x-factor.. there's much less of a herd mentality..
it's not just music fans that are bothering to access good music.. but pop fans too.. leaving a more knowledgeable and fractured fanbase in general..
far fewer people are willing to simply just buy into the next big thing
I'm talking stadiums i.e. 50,000 plus folk, not the 23,000 etc that the arenas hold.
I think that's a big ask for any band. Only A handful worldwide I reckon.

I repeat, Taylor Swift. 😆

Muse? Not that recent-10 years plus now, but still releasing new material.
5 years isn't alot of time for a band to develop the kind of career to sell out stadiums imo.
I bet that 1 Directions could probably manage it 😀
in the uk, take that. end of.
What about Chilli peppers, madonna, cold play, u2 all awful but popular. Prodigy could if they wanted too, Beyonce also.
And Taylor Swift.
Scratch that I have just read the question properly. 😳
take that. end of.
What? I assume you haven't got your ticket for The Stone Roses 75000-capacity Heaton Park Gigs? Did I mention that I have? No? Well I have now. 😀
*crosses fingers they'll still be together by 30th June*
Lady Gaga springs to mind, but not a lot else...
Edit: Adele could probably sell out an Arena too.
If that many people like them, chances are they're shoite.

Only if they appear naked though 😯
Generalising, to be a stadium band, you need to have been around for a while. Saying "what current band who appeared in the last five years" implies that current music is crap, which is a bit disingenuous.
Stadium acts that jump to mind include Madonna, U2, Metallica... U2 formed in 1976, do you reckon they'd have sold out a stadium in 1981?
Well done Cougar, saved me the bother of typing a response...
kazabian are pretty much there.
edit. beady eye, but thats cheating.
A decent band from the last five years? I must be getting old - i genuinely can't think of one. As above, the big stadium acts typically take years to mature...
50000 is nothing, anyway... Iron Maiden, Rock in Rio, 1985. 400000 people!
\m/ Up the Irons \m/
Too short a time... Go back in recording history, how many bands ever headlined big stadiums within 5 years of forming?
led zeppelin are the only ones i can think of.
The Bieber.
drac,
i'm reporting that.... 😀
The Darkness?
Dr Google isn't helping much, but i'm sure they did some big concert gigs... Formed in 2000 and split in 2006, so they'd be in the timescale.
how many bands ever headlined big stadiums within 5 years of forming?
Oasis - Formed 1991, playing Maine Road and Knebworth in 1996.
Paramore, easy
The Beatles played to 55000 in Shea Stadium in '65. Within 5 years of the start of the Ringo version.
Bieber, gaga, rihanna and maybe katy perry.
Good one, maycontainnuts. Proper meteoric rise, that.
Indeed, one of my regrets is not going to see them then, I had the chance. Most bands that can fill stadiums take much longer to get there and when they do they are are bloated and lazy living off of past glories, but at that time they were at their swaggering best.
Guns n Roses within 5 years? Saw them at Gateshead and the Stones at Hampden and have no desire to see anybody else in a stadium. Live music should be experienced in the likes of the Barras or King Tuts. Saw the Black Keys the other week at the Corn Exchange, about 3000 capacity? Wouldn't want to see anybody anywhere bigger than that. Was in King Tuts on Sunday, fantastic venue and gig.
Radiohead, Adele, Robbie Williams??
Guns n Roses within 5 years?
Good call; GnR formed in 85, Appetite was 87 and Illusion was 91, so yeah, they were stadium-ing in five years of becoming well known.
Paramore, easy
I love Paramore to bits but, stadium headliners? No chance.
I have to say the Foo Fighters are the only band I've seen with the presence for that size of gig. Probably 4 times the size of the Aerosmith gig I saw in Dublin, 10 times the size of the Iron Maiden and Muse gigs I saw in the noughties.
I think I'd enjoy a large scale Klaxons gig, maybe.
+1 for the foo fighters! 😈
Breakout @ wembley 2008
Foo Fighters did 85,000 in Hyde Park a few yrs ago..
Pendulum, Arctic Monkeys both 10 years old and could sell out a stadium?
Depeche Mode and The Cure still sell out stadiums in Europe and Muse sold out the San Siro last year.
over two nights at MK last yearFoo Fighters did 160,000
Kasabien, Foo Fighters, Radiohead, Elbow, U2
Foo Fighters formed in 94! I was at that hyde park gig and I'm pretty sure it wasn't in 1999, therefore DISQUALIFIED!
Arcade Fire. No problem.
Formed in 2001. There are rules people!
Rules are made to be broken. Bite me.
Kasabian would piss a two Nighter at wemberly, but older than 5 yrs, and shoot me now but I also think JLS could easily do it!
Adele could fill a stadium with her big fat bum.
Take That would have no problem
Arcade Fire. No problem.
Still too old a band for the OP. They were great at Edinburgh, don't think they needed any bigger a venue though.
