[Closed] What might be wrong with my remote? I can't get into my garage!

Last night I used the remote control to open my garage door then closed it again. Ten minutes later I tried to get back in but it wouldn't open - the light on the remote lit up when I pressed it but nothing happened. I manually opened the door and checked the fuses on the receiver unit and all was fine (and the status light lit up). I then tried with the spare (but slightly intermittent so not entirely trustworthy) remote and it worked. So what should I be looking for on the other one that has suddenly stopped working? Desperately trying to eek out a few more years of life of the door if I can!

Thank you

Tried replacing the battery in the remote? It may well light up but not generate a strong enough signal.

Otherwise you could consider erasing the remotes and pairing them again. Had to do that when my car got stolen with the remote in it and needed to secure the garage. Had to google the instructions but easy enough.

But the light on the remote lights up when pressed (but yes I can try that)

Unfortunately that isn't an option as they are an old design (they are about 30 years old) of 'high security' remote that cannot be paired / cloned etc. Believe me I have tried as I am essentially down to the one remote anyway as the 'spare' is really intermittent so the exact scenario I have now has always been a concern.

If all else fails you can get new transmitters for garage doors on the internet for approx £20-30, if you know the manufacturer, and I don't think there's that many. That'll get you through a few more years, maybe until something bigger (more expensive) breaks.
Edit: Just seen your post above.

The controller for the garage door on the house we bought was broken, so I removed it and wired in this as a direct replacement. It's cheap & allows smart control via Siri/Alexi/phone app/whatever.

Light on remote means nothing, just as with car keys. Get a new battery in it.

This was cheaper than a new remote for mine

That looks quite interesting - how easy was it to fit?

I did similar to mine.

Pretty straightforward TBH... just a couple of wires to be attached and a USB power supply needed. I bought a long USB extension lead separately as my power supply is on the wall.

The only thing that slightly puts me off is the absence of a remote (with a family of four we leave the remote in a drawer by the front door so anyone can easily get in and out). I do like the notifications though. Hmmm. If swapping the battery doesn't work it could be an option.

If it's an IR remote, you can check it's giving out a signal by viewing it through your phone camera

If you are all Apple users you can just shout “Hey Siri open the garage door“

I think the Meross one comes in a Google version too?

Mine was just 2 wires into quick connect terminals in the door mechanism, plug in a USB adapter and stick the reed switch on.

You do need a wifi signal in your garage obviously.

I nearly used a Shelly for mine but decided to get something made for the job.

wellllll, the Shelly 2 is actually made for controlling garage doors, etc, although I'll concede it isn't as plug-n-play as the Meross (the wiring sounds more complicated, plus you'll probably need to get a little enclosure from Screwfix to make it safe). It is less than half the price though! Also worth noting that Shelly doesn't work with Homekit out-the-box (although it is possible) but does with Google/Alexa. Sounds like Meross is cloud-based (i.e. relies on having internet access) unless you use HomeKit which is potentially worth bearing in mind if that's not the case.

The only thing that slightly puts me off is the absence of a remote (with a family of four we leave the remote in a drawer by the front door so anyone can easily get in and out)
with some WiFi systems - like Shelly, don't know about Meross! - you can have other devices tied in with the system, including a little WiFi button which can be placed anywhere, to activate stuff.

If you are all Apple users you can just shout “Hey Siri open the garage door“
so does that work if I shout through your letterbox?! 🤔 🤣
