Bought a nice old footstool, but it's a bit old fashionedly dark. What's the best way to strip the old 'varnish'(?) off. And I suppose by extension, what do I then put back on it? Probably a shade or 2 darker than the duck, (which I see also needs a bit of attention, thanks dog. 🫤)
Madame uses varnish remover and wire wool. Stains with osmo stain to a colour/recipe of choice. You can buy little sachets and then make the desired shade.
She has just done a small cabinet, started same as your stool and is now somewhere between stool and duck. Looks ace
Furstly i would give it a good scrub with some white spirit. You might find it lifts a whole lot of crud and old oxidised wax. That quite often makes things look alot better.
Next, it cpuld be shellac, a while of meths will show you instantly if it is. That will come off dead easy with some wirewool and meths. Thats all you need to do, everything goes over shellac.
Acetone will take off lacquer so thats what i would try next.
Then things get gross, i hate paint stripper. I prefer to scrape if i can. A pack of stanly blades and a can do attitude will have it off in jig time. Bit of stripper to get the corners if necessary.

Industrially made, so is likely to have been q spray lacquer, and the only thing that will take that of is acetone.

Lots and lots of it.
You'll also have to remove the soft pad, or it will get some of the finish on it.
So once the finish is off, lots of sanding, and probably a dark stainer too, unless the post sanded is quite clear and not patchy
