I've got the lounge now sorted with my TV, Yamaha amp and surround speaker set-up. Currently 5.1 but have 2 spare satellite speakers so may go 7.1..
Need some speaker stands for the L/R rear and my Jamo (not quite) floorstanders.
As there's quite a few audio-nerds (in a good way) on here I thought I'd try and get some ideas as to what makes a speaker stand good as, with my access to materials & CNC machines, I thought I'd like to try and make some..
So, experts, what makes a good speaker stand good?
Weight and good coupling so the speaker doesn’t move. 3 spikes seem to be the optimum.
I fill mine up with sand. It doesn’t have to be kiln dried audiofool sand either, anything will do.
Any strong, stiff structure will do a good job. Either high mass structure or hollow tubes you can fill with sand. Use spikes on the base, as said above 3 spikes are easier to balance and more stable than 4. On the speaker plinth you can either use spikes again or if your speakers allow some kind of fixing to be put in place, you can bolt the speakers to the stands as per my Focal speakers. Makes the speaker and stand one unit and more stable.
So, experts, what makes a good speaker stand good?
I'm no expert but I imagine the right height would make a difference?
For rears in a 5.1 setup height and aesthetics would be prime considerations
Rigid and non resonant.
If it's a brick wall and a wooden floor, a shelf would probably be better, depending on your speakers.
I’ve got a pair of stands upstairs that I bought back in the 80’s when rigid stands first became popular, they’re welded, powder-coated steel, rectangular base with spikes, rectangular column with square top, column is filled with a mixture of fine sand and lead shot. I can promise you they’re not something you want to kick with no shoes on... 😖
I was struggling to remember the make, but it’s just come to me, Foundation Stands. Looks like they’re not made any longer, but s/h examples are around:

edit - seems like they’re still around - http://www.foundationaudio.ca
S/H is probably the way to go, tho’.
