Going to kick off doing some Audax - used to enjoy them when I was a kid many moons ago!
One thing I don’t have is a rainproof shell. What’s the going favourite these days - budget not important.
Cycling cape and mudguards prevents mucho misery on long distances in steady rain...
(it can actually be enjoyably warm and cozy in your portable microclimate)
For good weather rides and as a just in case, I carry one of those #2 rain ponchos which are about the size of about of matches.
Otherwise a Pertex shell, eg Montane or Rab.
Oh definitely getting mudguards. Good shout on a cape. Old school but so effective 🙂
Very impressed despite initial reserves by my Columbia caldorado outdry.
Castelli Emergency is the best I’ve owned...not that I’ve had many.
Held up well for a few hours in near continuous rain on training rides where most would have been breached.
I've been using a Vaude Skyfly for a few years. Very breathable, waterproof and rolls up small enough to fit in a pocket. Not too pricy either, for version 2: just looked it up, and the new version 3 looks like it's doubled in price!
Goretex shake dry stuff (like the Goretex One 1985) is the best around assuming you don't need it insulated, have a slim build and deep pockets.

Borrowed one off a friend to try before buying and they are indeed awesome. You hardly know you are wearing it. And he confirmed it to be dry as a bone in long wet rides.
Getting a gore one is a very good shout if it's entirely road based (i.e no crashing or brambles/thorns), you're not wearing a pack and you can afford it
Rapha Core waterproof is brill and packs down like a windproof. Does me for Audax outings. Brevet shorts FTW too!
Another vote for the Gore shake dry stuff if it's road specific and you're not wearing a pack (and if money isn't an object). I've got the 7Mesh Oro. Packs down to nothing - can easily fit in a road jersey pocket with room to spare. Incredibly breathable. I wore mine for the entirety of a 12 hour, 200 mile ride with biblical rain and at times humid conditions. Kept me completely comfortable and dry throughout. The breathability really is incredible. The fit of the 7Mesh is spot on for me - bought a medium based on the size guide, no sizing up/down required.
Ooo those Gore Shakedry look nice. They are quite pricey though ain’t they but if they’re as good as people say.
Will have a look through all the suggestions here - thanks all

Does look good and comes in bright yellow which is great for winter commuting..
Massively impressed with my DHB Aeron for the price I paid. 2 years and still beads nicely.

A few on the sale rack at Evans in Leeds City Centre today. (half price)
Could be the same elsewhere or online but I’ve not looked.
Worth a try.
I’ve actualky gone for the Winter Ralpha Core for now given we’re heading that way. Makes sense and then I’ll have a look at a shell in spring (unless I can find a half-price Shakedry!).
I’ve gone for the bright pink option just to annoy Mrs Danny...
Showers Pass stuff is quality.
various models.
I've done a few road tours with a mate of mine who has a Sportful Stelvio jacket. He seems to practically live in it so it must be pretty breathable, never gets wet even in constant steady rain, and despite looking like a "proper" jacket, when he does take it off it disappears into the corner of a jersey pocket. Not cheap, but seems to be the business.
I've got a Castelli Riparo and I've been impressed. Small enough for a pocket or slightly larger saddle bag.
Pertex shield stuff is good, I've got a Montane top that uses it that I really rate. Good blend of high breathability and waterproofness, plus stretchy, light and a good fit.
Got the Montane one definitely the most "boil in the bag" though great in every other aspect. Had a cheaper slightly heavier sprayaway but lost the hood emailed them to enquire about purchasing a hood they didn't even email back so will never recommend them. the best one I've had was marmot precip.
My Endura FS260 shell performed very well on an audax last weekend - waterproof and fairly breathable. It packs down small enough to fit in a road jersey pocket, and sizing seems spot on.
I tried on one of the gore shake dry jackets today. Very tempting.
