So, our current lap top is a 7 year old Dell, it works at a snails pace now, so i think we need a new one.

I know nothing about them so hopefully some of you can point me in the direction of what we should be looking at.

Our needs are basic:
Our 12 year old son needs to do his home work on it for the next few years.
Surf the net.
I Tunes.
Word (probably also Power Point / Excel for homework too).
That's about it!

Price wise we're looking at the cheaper end of the scale, we'd like to be as future proof as we can with it.

Also a wireless printer.

What sort of spec should we be aiming for at our budget?

Cheers.

Is the current laptop definitely past it? Mine old one was utterly transformed by putting an ssd into it. New drive and a clean windows install may give you a few more years service. You aren't working it very hard

Regarding printer. I bought my dad one of these at Christmas and I have an older model from 2 years before. Does everything and cartridges are cheap enough to replace. Was a piece of piss to setup

We just bought an HP Envy Printer at PCWorld - £49 from £119, with 9 months free ink on their (cheap) instant ink service worth £72 or 2700 pages... Despite the box and display saying only 5 months, the voucher was for 9 months.

You are not signed up for a year.
Our old print cartridges would have cost £60 for a set, and wouldn't last long.

What is the spec of current laptop?

A clean install on a new SSD hard drive and some more RAM transforms old machines IME.

SSD is a solid state drive. A bit like a giant memory stick 🙂 No moving parts so they are much faster than old hard drives. Its an easy DIY job but if you are really unsure then a local repair shop will be able to do it. That might push the price up to most of the cost of a new laptop though but worth asking.
