Any knife enthusiasts out there? Given the amount of burners - there has to be a few! Budget up to £70. 🙂
Any knife enthusiasts out there?
An erstwhile member of this very parish would have, about now, been frothing at the mouth and calling you a psychopathic murdering barsteward. 😀
Opinel would be my pick. Choose your size.
One of these by flexcut??? linky
Opinel* are a bit hard on the hands for whittling, I would go with a Mora: http://www.nordicoutdoor.co.uk/mora-woodcarving-137.html
BTW I recently commissioned a rather beautiful handmade knife from this chap: http://www.tpknives.com
EDIT: *In my opinion...
Palmer..... Oooooooo lovely! This is my last custom handle for a chap I know.... [img]

I borrowed this last time I was down my mates, never actually knew the price of it until now! 😆
haven't actually used it as yet, but I do intend to, cheers for the reminder. 🙂
*1 for Opinel. You could even buy a larger one and a tiny one for microwhittlin'
The carbon opinels are pretty nice.

OOoooo! 😮 Very nice. How much to custom a handle like that one? I might need to custom some for my knives from far east next time.
The Opinels are cheap but not great for extended use, the Mora Classic is a simple every day knife and the wood carver is pretty similar but I reckon its a bit too long for a whittler. Try the Mora Eric Frost 106 or 120 for more control. www.moonrakerknives.co.uk
Checked... Drop me a pm with what you want, it can depend on what woods I have in, what sort of conditions it'll be used in (can get stabilised wood) size of blade also has a bearing ie I have some iron wood which is great but needs a big ass knife as it's so heavy...
Thanks all. I was looking at the Mora range, so plumped for the 106. The custom knife is gorgeous! 🙂

When I get my knives back I will pm you as I left them in the far east. Some custom officers at the airport gave me some hassles so I left them at my parents before returning here.
Those Palmer knives are just stunning! That handle is a nice bit of work, too, daftvader, looks like it'll be nice and comfy in the hand, and nice colour and grain as well.
I've used stabilised Spalted beech for a Nic Westermann blade I bought a while back, gives a lovely finish, very smooth in the hand.
No worries chewkw, any time.
Nice! Let me know when they get here and we can then talk wood!
😆 I'll set em up.....
I order Le Voyager from TP knives, it's Brazilian kings wood, with a carbon steel blade, red liner and mosaic pins. All in I think it was around £230-250. But its sharper than any knife I have ever owned and comes with a handmade leather sheath too.

Can we see some pics of what you expensive knife owners have whittled?
Heres a spoon I carved recently. I used the Mora knife (pictured) for the finer detail.

I love the bronze blade!
Cheers, I got bored one afternoon and decided to make something and had that lump of bronze laying around so decided to make a knife. It's been hammer harden so holds a fairly good edge too. Unfortunately whilst hardening the tang broke so I ended up bolting and gluing the blade, hence the leather thong but I like the overall effect, especially the curve of the blade and the antler
Have wanted one of this guy's knives for a while now, but very hard to get hold of. He doesn't even appear to take orders, so God knows how you get one! Jacklore Knives
Does anyone have any opinions on the Pfeil Schaller knives. Was thinking of getting a large and small for some whittling.
Yep - went for the Mora, although there are some beautiful objects linked to in this thread.
As there are enthusiasts here, can anyone recommend sites/practices on best ways to care for knives?
Learn to sharpen your knives properly, YouTube is your friend here, personally I have various different types of sharpening stones from diamond, oil and water to ceramic and leather. And don't leave them wet. Other than that they are pretty much bomb proof now.
Re: Sharpening.
British Blades is full of info - or Bushcraft UK, if that side of things interests you too.
FWIW, I've gone down the route of having lots of sheets and grades of wet'n'dry on boards after talking to a lot of people at Bushmoot (forum meet from Bushcraft UK)
As a vegan, I never managed to find a good strop, but I eventually saw a leather belt with a broken buckle in a bin and it helps enormously. I didn't really realise how important it is to getting that last bit of sharpness (by de-burring) before.
Midnight will make you anything can't beat quality and at a decent price
