Weve got 2 kittens coming next weekend.. any recommendations on what to feed them (apart from feeding them straight to the dog).
Dry or wet food?
Squirrel, rabbit or baby robbins?
Already been named Bongo and Gruff if thats important.
Whatever they are eating now to start with. Ask whoever you are getting them from
Cats are fussy gits, they'll happily eat something for months, then one day, won't touch it.
Yes, normally it is best to ask the felines themselves. Any recommendations from here will probably be ignored out of principle.
Wet wet wet food.
Water, not milk drinkies.
Never feed from a can, even a bit of tuna as a treat - if you do, make sure they don't associate the sound of a can with food, as you'll never be able as much reach for a can of anything ever again, without them suddenly being tangled at your feet, trying to kill you*
*That is their sole purpose.
When we got ours the previous carers were cooking them all kinds of exciting and wacky stuff. We just gave them one meal of wet food from a pouch and the rest dry food. It was whatever Pets at Home had on offer.
They've grown up not to be fussy.
Ours has been fed on dry for most of her life with wet stuff more as a treat. Lots of kak in some of the foods. So read the packets. When ours were on just wet things were more messy/smelly if you get my drift 😯 dry pretty much stopped that 🙂
She's nearly 19 now so can't be too far wrong.
To start off, feed them whatever they are getting at the moment. Them coming to you will be an exciting day for your family, but for the kittens it is going to be stressful to leave their mum, siblings and everything that they know behind to join a house full of new sounds and smells.
In time you have 3 main choices:
Dry - biscuits - some can be very good - Orijen/Applaws for example.
Wet - there's a lot of crap wet food out there - check the tins and see what %age of the food is actually meat - anything that you can get in the supermarket will be either low quality or high-priced.
Raw - a bit specialized, but some people swear by it - you can order from pet shops or online - basically ground up meat/organs, etc that you feed to them, well, raw.
Whatever they are on now - if you want to change that make sure that the transition is done slowly.
Mine get Orijen biscuits with the occasional pouch as a treat. My boy Babbage has a sensitive stomach and Orijen is one of a few foods that don't cause him to have diarrhoea.
Obviously, don't feed your kittens cows milk.
Personally, I use Zooplus for almost all of my cat food/litter/treats needs- they are generally competitively priced, do free delivery over a certain amount and have a good range of quality products. With 2 cats and a dog you can pay a small amount to get a 5% discount on orders for a couple of years which will more than pay for itself.
EDIT: if feeding dry food it is especially important to ensure that they get a good supply of fresh water - a fountain is a good idea.
Got 4 cats. Always fed them wet and dry food. They prefer wet but dry is good for teeth and gums. Ours get a couple of packs of ham a week too.
Don't give them milk!! The resulting smells and mess will probably deter you anyway.
I wouldn't say raw feeding has to be complicated.
My moggy gets Nutriment food which is cheap and easy to feed. It comes in a small frozen block which lasts about a week. He gets raw chicken wings 3 times a week too.
The major bonus for me switching to a raw diet is that his poo doesn't stink anywhere near as much as it used to and he's certainly more active and in better condition than when he was on dry food previously.
I'm not convinced that dry food is the best for a cat as they don't have a well developed thirst reflex so most of their moisture needs to come from their food. Also, most processed wet foods seem to be bulking agent and low in meat content. e.g with the raw food Ollie gets, he only needs 30g a day (for a 5 Kg cat!) to maintain his weight.

Dry food. She likes the Brekkies Liver stuff from Wilkos best. That and baby rabbits 🙂
