We have a 14 week old puppy and we are still trying to work out the best routine for her.

At the moment she goes out first thing (in the garden as not quite ready to go out properly yet) for a toilet visit, then she gets breakfast. The thing is, popular advice is to take them out after each feed but if she has just been, she won't go again straight after.

So should we feed first thing then take her out (although this seems unfair to me as she is doing well in holding on all night as it is)? Take her out, feed then wait a little longer before she goes out again (but if we do that it won't be the same routine as we'd have for the rest of the day)?

I always thought it was unwise to exercise a dog after feeding as it can cause bloat. However ianav

It should take about 20-30 minutes for dinner to pass through a pup, so leave it that long after feeding . Drinking usually goes through quicker. Try just taking out every hour as well. Our 'pup' is now 5 months old. lets us know he wants out and has done for a while. If you are using puppy pads reduced the number down and remove as quick as poss, it just encourages them to pee in the house on them.

We stopped with the pads quite quickly, but we have just got over a bout of diarrhoea so we are a bit all over the place with what her routine should be.

Perfect puppy by gwen Bailey is well worth a read. Covers this subject in detail. By 16-20 weeks ours was pretty much house trained and going on command.
