Any one able to ID this flying monster? I've never seen anything as big as this in the UK (Scottish highlands if it helps).

Wood wasp?

That's her ovidepositor which it used to lay eggs in the bark of trees.

Or your brain.

It’s a fully grown midge.

One day soon, they’ll all be that size.

Oxfords and brougues 😉.

I didn’t hear it fly, it was just chilling on the floor.

By the phrasing and the shoes I presumed you were wearing a kilt.

Shirt, tie, shorts and sandals?

I was at work and unfortunately very not new anymore.

By the phrasing and the shoes I presumed you were wearing a kilt.

I am English so can’t wear a kilt.

Disagree.

Everyone should wear a kilt. You'll be welcomed.

Just make sure it's a subtle, understated pattern, like some of the Cornish ones. Or a 5.11 Tactikilt. Multicam 'natch.

Jesus Mary and Joseph and all the bloody disciples.  If I found that thing next to my shoe the last thing I'd be doing is photographing it.

And discovering new words too

My wife is Scottish so I’ve understood the lingo before I moved here.

Jesus Mary and Joseph and all the bloody disciples.  If I found that thing next to my shoe the last thing I’d be doing is photographing it.

I was ready to run, I’m just glad it was in focus as I wasn’t going back.

They're totally harmless. And sounds like a chinook in flight.
