Found three of these little lizards in my garden under some planks. Are they newts?

probably a newt?

and therefore likely to be protected so I'd leave well alone...

Looks like a female Smooth Newt to me... Possibly a Palmate...

looks like a baby t-rex to me, have you been injecing frogspan with long extinct dna harvested from mosquitos trapped in prehistoric amber? i bloody knew it!!

Absolutely a newt. Found one once marching across our warehouse floor at work. As we're around ¾ mile from any water source or pond that I'm aware of, I have no idea at all how it got there. I put it into a little plastic box with some damp tissue and took it to a pond recommended by the local wildlife people. While I don't have a licence to handle them, common sense dictates that leaving it to be squashed by a fork truck or pallet truck is out of the question. Cute little things, though. I'd leave them there, they eat all sorts of bugs and stuff, so they're good to have in the garden.
