I know I know, live and let be, but what is it about anti monarchists and proclaiming their point as loudly as they can.
They cost too much...they earn too much...what do they do for us....
Please, just like everything else, please prepare an argument worth commenting upon. Don't just utter drivvle and expect wholehearted applause
[/rant]
cos they're different to me! different is bad, bad like soggy chips!!!!
*awaits wholehearted applause*
Nothing, I know my place ...
Please, just like everything else, please prepare an argument worth commenting upon
Why don't you start the ball rolling by justifying the existence of monarchy?
MSP
Why?
Don't just utter drivvle and expect wholehearted applause
are you asking what is wrong with someone being born into a position of power and authority over us all by vuirtue of being the eldest [ MALE} in a long line of back stabbing shits who killed their family or married them
Honestly I dont know where to start explaing it to you.
But its wrong.
😳
Sorry MSP i though this was how th thread was going - I did make more of a point that the person who does not want to justify their view but does want the right to explain why yothers are wrong. In that case can I add that lovers of the monrarchy have a lower IQ than republ;icans [ and perhaps even publicans] FACT
Don't just utter drivvle and expect wholehearted applause
Is this your first visit here?
What would they do? Its hardly like they could go and get in the queue at Poundstretchers for a Christmas job?
I've got something in mind for Harry if you start a revolution I'll find him something to do.....
Have you seen this thread?
http://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/remind-me-what-century-are-we-in-again
It's just a ludicrous anachronism that has no place in a modern democractic society. If you really need it explaining to you further.....
So let me ask you guys a question?
If any of you recruit staff do you limit your recruitment process to one person, perhaps the son of the person leaving for example?
NO?? Well why not? and if you can answer that you will be half way to answering your own question.
The second half is if you have God forbid recruited an idle and particularly useless creature into your job, do you simply hunker down and wait for them to die before doing something about it?
Once you’ve answered that you will pretty much have answered your whole question all by yourself.

Nothing at all, I love em 😳
There are two main reasons for objections to the Monarchy.
Firstly, the Great British national obsession with finding something to moan on and on about with regards to absolutely everything (especially if cost/tax-payers money can be brought into it).
Secondly, we're deeply suspicious/cynical about anything we don't properly understand and therefore resort to our default 'complain' setting. Unfortunately this often means spouting opinions without knowing any real facts about the subject.
It is for the same reason that the Daily Fail has survived for so long.
Chaps,
This is exactly my point.
Ramming home some ancient grudge. Are you basically sore because you think they have an easy life?
I personally think our political system sucks, but i don't advocate absolute change and revolution! Monarchy has it's place in our 'modern' system. Church and State are separate, unlike the US. Enormous amount of charity work, good causes, diplomacy and keeping trade relations going. In essence they are a brand against which many rely upon.
I'm not wanting to argue, and won't. Just understand me when I say I'm a loyalist, and can't quite get to grips with your hatred of such a fundamental part of our global identity.
If any of you recruit staff do you limit your recruitment process to one person, perhaps the son of the person leaving for example?
???
Members of the Monarchy aren't "employed" as staff into the Royal Family... they're born into it, same as my kids are born into all the wealth and privileges that comes with being a member of my family 😕
They cost too much...they earn too much...what do they do for us....
Seems worth commenting on to me 😯 all that by virtue of birth, not ability
Orf with their heads........or the top floor of nelson Mandela house.......s'all good... 😀
The French had the right idea
Members of the Monarchy aren't "employed" as staff into the Royal Family... they're born into it,
...and thereby hangs the tale doesn't it. So why do you reckon the passing of job from father to son stopped a good while back?

Nice attempt to link The Daily Mail with not liking the royals - unfortunately I think you'll find you've got it the wrong way round.
Monarchy has it's place in our 'modern' system.
Like vetoing legislation that doesn't suit their business interests?
They don't have our permission.

WTF are you on about - who is the head of the state here and who is the head of the church – CLUE its the monarch.
Who gets seats in an unelected legislative chamber and in which country [ clues the church in the house of lords here]
Who separates church and state - clue its the US
May i refer you to my earlier point abut royalists being stupid hence why my clues are answers 🙄
I don't live in utopia? Do you?
Do you think the Russians had it any better under Stalin?
Or maybe the US Senate is beyond reproach? In the US, where everyone is appointed, and nobody is given a free ride (except the Ivy League) they have to rely on the PR machinations of guilt ridden celebrities to support worthy causes...
That sounds like a much better system....lets hope the next round of Xfactor wannabes share your views

Are you basically sore because you think they have an easy life?
Yep. And at the expense of everyone else. Why not be sore?
Having said that, extra day's holiday next year for the jubilee, therefore hoorah for her majesty.
Northwind lol
Church and State are separate, unlike the US.
The Church and State are separate in the US, which is believed by some to explain why it is in such an awful state over there (zero regulation or public body scrutinise it). The Queen is head of the CofE, so in our country it isn't separate.

Good answer..well put... 😯
i liked it, but then I would
Do you think the Russians had it any better under Stalin?
I need this comparison explaining NOW! Because, to be frank, it sounds a touch bananas.
*is still waiting for my wholehearted applause*
Having said that, extra day's holiday next year for the jubilee, therefore hoorah for her majesty.
Ooooooh I didn't know that, hoorah indeed! Good old madge.. 😀
my point is this:
The views on here are extreme, so i went from Monarchy to socialism, and that works, doesn't it 😯
Wahoo lets have another unnecessary bank holiday for no good reason its just precisely what we need
Just like an extra arsehole or a monarch
The views on here are extreme, so i went from Monarchy to socialism, and that works, doesn't it
Works pretty well in Scandinavia.
Church and State are separate, unlike the US
Wow hadn't noticed this. Sorry but can you expect people to take you seriously when you get a basic fact so massively wrong? 😯

Oh. Okay. 😆
I'm with the Republicans on here, but I'm too bored today to feel extreme. Carry on!
The reason people hate the monarchy is because the royal family are far richer and more privileged than they are.
Pure jealousy. 8)
The reason people hate the monarchy is because the royal family are far richer and more privileged than they are.Pure jealousy.
So everyone who would like a slightly more equitable division of wealth and power in this country is just jealous? Hmmm.....
Works pretty well in Scandinavia.
I suppose so, yes.
But I'm pretty sure the cost versus the recouped monies based from direct and indirect sales attributed to the existence of our Monarchy make it a worthwhile, viable part of our identity.
I don't advocate our Monarchy stepping back into political limelight, but the function it plays helps to maintain barriers between opposing parts of our political and religious systems.
After all, this country should be proud of its ability to provide far more diversity of ideas and ideology than most.
Prince Charles FTW

Cobblers!!!

Thanks for pointing that out, there was me thinking the reason why I don't like them is because they are un-elected. How stupid of me to believe that in what is supposedly a democracy after all.
I like the way that being a monarchy keeps us right in the forefront of the world thrusting along with the likes of this lot who are the other monarchies that still survive..

I'm no monarchist.
But there's plenty of nations/principalities on your list that (in global terms) are getting along quite nicely, Norway, Sweden, Saudi, Qatar, Canada, Japan, Monaco and The Netherlands being good examples.
Church and State are separate, unlike the US
Wow hadn't noticed this. Sorry but can you expect people to take you seriously when you get a basic fact so massively wrong?
My point was based upon money being the deciding vote in their political process, and don't try and tell me that the churches, in all their many flavours don't apply great gobs of cash in regards to all sorts of issues voted upon.
The country is soooo religious, and you cannot expect religion not to persuade their views. It does.
Their constitution may separate it, but real life gets in the way of the written word, indeed what worries me most about their system and ours, for that matter are the forces at work that are never written down.
Church and State are separate, unlike the US
While legally untrue, it's factually fairly close to the truth - the British state is a lot more atheist that the US one, you'd be hard pushed to find a senior politician banging on about his or her faith, while in the US the opposite is true...
There are two main reasons for keeping the monarchy: 1)it works*; and 2) President Blair (or Thatcher).
* it does work: despite a number of faults, it's stable, relatively free of corruption, not massively given to either oppression or populist gestures, etc.
you'd be hard pushed to find a senior politician banging on about his or her faith,
*cough* Tony Blair *cough*
Im torn, I actually like tradition and appreciate the pomp and ceremony and the huge influx of tourism it brings. Plus the vast sums of money raised for charity and good causes by the royals.
Yet I cant argue with the logic behind the weirdness supporting an unchosen few..
I hate to agree with socialists though, so for now.. its extra bank holidays for me!
all socialists should be made to work on that day.
We should deffinately drop the national anthem though, its becoming very tedious and embarrassing at sporting events etc.
*cough* Tony Blair *cough*
Not until he was out of office, though.
I like having them around, its part of what makes us better than other countries!
Truth be told they cost us bugger all really, the civil list is granted in exchange for land the Royals handed over.
As for hereditary wealth, got no problem with it....I'd like to know that I can pass my home, savings and belongings to my children when I pass on, this should always be a right regardless of wealth.
I also like the layers of government in this country, a combination of MPs, Peers and the Royals generally ensure not too many collosal mistakes are made by one power wielding President or party.
Do you think the Russians had it any better under Stalin?
Which is something these anti-Royalist agitators conveniently like to forget.
Having a monarch as head of state guarantees that we will never have a communist government - that's a fact ........ a teacher at school once told me so.
And there is no better example of what a credit to the nation royalty are, than the Queen Mum, God rest her soul. She always had a smile for us during the Blitz. And it was that simple morale boosting act during our darkest hour, along with indefatigability of the proud British character of course, which guaranteed final victory. Gerry never stood a chance ...... what were they thinking ?
We salute you Ma'am ....
If we got rid of the real Royal Family those bloody awful womens magazines would appoint the beckhams or some other losers in their place.
ps I bloody hate Tony Blair. Just imagine that sanctimonious ****er as president. Did I mention I really really hate Tony bloody Blair?
If we got rid of the real Royal Family those bloody awful womens magazines would appoint the beckhams or some other losers in their place.
Good point.......can you imagine how tedious hospital appointments would become ? 😐
BTW which is your favourite mag for the latest royalty gossip zippykona ?
Call me an old softy but I saw the Queen go past in her car and I was really excited. The hairs on my arms stand up when I hear God Save The Queen and I go just a little bit peculiar. Maybe I have been brain washed all my life, I just like her that's all.
And I still hate that lying scumbag Blair.
If any of you recruit staff do you limit your recruitment process to one person, perhaps the son of the person leaving for example?
If it's a family business, then yes.
In reality - monarchy or no, it makes very little difference.
The hairs on my arms stand up when I hear God Save The Queen and I go just a little bit peculiar.
I know that special feeling 🙂
It's not something which Johnny Foreigner will ever understand. It makes you realise how lucky we are 8)
Church and State are separate, unlike the USMy point was based upon money being the deciding vote in their political process,
TOP TIP:
Next time you want to blame money why not mention it in your point rather than a factual inaccuracies about something unrelated 🙄
you were wrong just admit it as that explanation does not make you look any better.
If it's a family business, then yes.In reality - monarchy or no, it makes very little difference.
one wonders why other nations bother with elections then after the first one for head of state ......any suggestions why they do this?
one wonders why other nations bother with elections then after the first one for head of state ......any suggestions why they do this?
Because they do it all wrong........foreigners always do. Like driving on the wrong side of the road.
i luve em.. cheaper than elections ever 4 years where we d end up with alternating boris johnson tony blair ego ists whod then demand a big pension.. much better to let old phil and liz soldier on ( how many other 85 yr olds travel never mind as much as they do.. good on em they could have cleared off 20 yrs ago and people would have said she was due a retirement but no shes stuck at it and certainly has my respect.
cut out the dead wood 3rd cousins etc and we re on our way
i think someone has taken over ernie's on-line persona.
Love the irony of using johnny foreigner and the Royal House of Saxe Coburg Gotha in the same sentence.
Because they are so popular, even in Aus and it gets under the rabid republicans skin. Hilarious!!
i would like to add weight to the gratitude we owe our marvelous royals for their selflessness during the blitz.
without their efforts we certainly would have ended up with a german as head of state. then where would we be ?
gawd bless 'em.
i think someone has taken over ernie's on-line persona.
your irony on here is not lost on us all ernie though i suspect some of your best work is lost on many.
any suggestions why they do this?
Er.. isn't it obvious?
They were often deposed in revolutions back at a time when the monarchy were actually ruling things.
Anyone have an example of a modern non-executive monarchy that just got wrapped up?
I'm sure they are lovely people and they do a lot for charity/tourism etc, but, when you've got millions on the bank and own some hefty property, you probably don't need me to help pay for your boat/holiday/DIY. Also, all that chosen by god guff, if you are gods chosen leader, why's the country so far up s**t creek then. Except harry, he seems like at least he's fun. but of a knob i'm sure, probably, but fair do's at least he works a bit.
Having people born to something is wrong, be it poverty or royalty if you cannot see that I pity you.
I like having a monarch as head of state because it represents continuity and is reasonably a-political. I do not want an elected president; we have enough politicians.
I don't care that they are rich by their own efforts, but it's the curtseying, the bowing and scraping, the entitlement to live in lavish state buildings, the tax money spend on the civil list and royal security.
They should pay rent on Bucks' palace, or move into a semi in Guildford!
you'd be hard pushed to find a senior politician banging on about his or her faith, while in the US the opposite is true...
but, i read that Americans are not going to church anymore in anything like numbers they used to.
The Queen is OK I suppose, but I don't see why I should bow or curtsey or call her anything other than Liz or Mrs Windsor though, she's no different to my gran, I'd get rid of all the rest of them, all the hanger on and aunties and cousins
It's why Englishmen have knees; to get down on them before your betters.
It's a fairly Medieval way of thinking that may have served us well in days gone by but has, fortunately, run its course. The royal family are just part of the celeb roadshow, more tabloid fodder, more opium for the dim.
Pippa's arse notwithstanding...
Having people born to something is wrong
So will you leave your house to your kids when you die?
i'll probably work something out so that we they can avoid the inheritance tax.
because we have to pay tax.
The Queen pays tax on a voluntary basis from her private income, but not on "head of state expenditure". But she did not pay almost £20m of inheritance tax after the death of the Queen Mother: this, says the royal website, is primarily because "constitutional impartiality requires an appropriate degree of independence for the sovereign".
Junkyard, I'll admit to a slight error in phrasing, if you admit you secretly cherish a royal dalton mug of Charles and Diana's wedding, and you spent all of your pocket money on it. Now that it's worthless, your manifestation of anger and bitterness is aimed at royalists and all they stand for.
There there junkyard, it's ok.
molgrips you compared the head of state to a family business so why dont other nations do this instead of elections ?- you did not answer that question
AndyRT - MemberThe views on here are extreme, so i went from Monarchy to socialism
Well, no, you didn't- you went from monarchy to fascist dictatorship. Stalin was as much a socialist as Prince Charles is a republican.
Fair point.
But you get my point...
One of the best arguments against monarchy is the intelligence shown by those who support it...
... And Prince Charles, a total waste of food...
molgrips you compared the head of state to a family business so why dont other nations do this instead of elections ?- you did not answer that question
Yeah, I did. Republicanism arose through other events, so that's now what they have.
