What is it about a good scab?

I've had a small graze on my elbow for a couple of weeks, and today the scab had finished its job and pretty much fell off, albeit with a bit of picking. Then I have an urge to eat it. Serious question, I'm genuinely curious... why is this? What is it about the human psyche or evolution that thinks that's a good idea? Same with a bogey, or a bit of loose scalp, or the tiny tags that appear by fingernails etc.

This is not new, always done it, and I was 62 a couple of days ago.

Of course, if it's just me, then flame away!

Picking yes, eating no.

I'm sure you're not alone though.

There are some things you should just keep to yourself.

An invite to yours for "drinks and nibbles" might get a few rebuffs.

Disgusting, I know, as my wife tells me so, but I'm with you OP.  Also dead skin off my feet.

Yeah barbecuing scabs or dead skin off feet ain't gonna make the prospect of eating that shit any more appealing, sorry but it's a no from me.

Picking is ace! I used to play a ton of hockey on sandpaper astroturf and my supply was constant. It never once occurred to me to eat dat shit.

Another compulsive picker here (much to the cosmetic detriment of my arms and legs), but those scabs get examined and flicked but never eaten. UGH!

As an aside, picking scabs replaced biting nails for me as a compulsive habit. Not sure which is worse/better?

That response took longer than I expected, tbh.

OK, seems like it's basically just @longdog and me that are a bit weird. Heyho.

Picking at, yes: scabs, nails, cuticles, errant eyebrow, ear, nose hairs, etc.

A natural propensity to fiddle with things perhaps?

Never once had the desire to see how any of it tasted though.

Then I have an urge to eat it.

Fried, it's called Black Pudding. Perfectly normal 🙂

Used to work with a bloke who would straighten a paperclip out, mine for earwax with it and then eat what he'd dug out. Even the excavation part looked terrifying enough!

On the plus side,  he'd quite often suck an Aspirin for dessert  - totally understand that one.

So, for the eaters, did you eat anything else unusual when you were younger? Stuff like pencils, cardboard, tree bark, string... Asking for a friend.

Definitely used to chew on pencils and pens and have consumed a more than a few bookmarks, leather ones being more tasty than cardboard ones.

Tbh I don't have the 'urge' the OP mentions I just do it without even thinking

I've a vague recollection of some comedian talking about how weird pork scratchings sounded, and wondering why we didn't also eat chicken itchings and sheep scabs.
