As it says - if you wanted to be generous (but not overly so), what would be the rate you pay a 19 year old to make sure your 12 and 9 year old don't destroy the place whilst you're out?
National Living Wage is £9.50 an hour, so you should pay that really.
£10 rounded up to nearest half hour, certainly for London
Interesting to think that the cost for baby sitting is substantially more than the cost of the concert I'm trying to attend; there's no resentment there, just an observation!
Asking someone to work for you for a few hours probably would be more expensive than splitting the cost of an event across hundreds or thousands of people.
£10 / hr, round up. Add a bit more if you are back 'late'. Provide pizza, wifi and Netflix as a minimum.
And, yes often doubles the cost of a night out (and is why going to the cinema together in particular is not a thing).
If you have friends local who are also not blessed with family etc who they can get to baby sit for them, then you'll probably find they'll jump at the chance of a tit for tat babysitting arrangement.
We tend to pay when we're going to be out before the kids go to bed or back very late, but if it's just siting in a house while the kids sleep we try and use the tit for tat arrangement.

But baby-sitting isn't a job - it's sat watching Netflix whilst concurrently raiding the fridge – especially with kids of that age.

Just get the baby sitter to also look after 3 other parents kids at the same time and you will only have to pay £2.50 each.

So you'll be doing it for free then?

LOL she'll be sorely disappointed. I do not have a TV and the fridge is usually empty!
But baby-sitting isn’t a job
Having the responsibility for someone else's children and their home isn't a job !!
So you’ll be doing it for free then?
I didn't say don't pay the baby-sitter, but National Living Wage rules don't apply to casual arrangements for the kid next door helping out for a few hours whilst you go out.

And cash in hand is tax free too 🙄
your 12 and 9 year old
and

You monster!

Best add another tenner in for her to order a pizza then.
So without netflix, the babysitter(s) will bring her/his boyfriend/girlfriend around and entertain themselves on your bed...I would hire a video from blockbuster for them...
You monster!
That's not the half of it. I make them empty their lunch boxes when they get home from school, put their shoes and coats away, place their dirty dishes in the washer and even sort their own washing!

Or indeed Go Pro......LOL.
Your question was what's a generous rate. You could always ask the babysitter what's their going rate, if they lowball it round up a bit, they are unlikely to say £15 an hour

No amount of money would tempt a teenager into a home without a fully-stocked fridge and Netflix. Do tell me you actually have broadband though?
And the hidden GoPro

I have fibre to the premises! Oh and a kick ass stereo!

Until, because you've no TV and they've never seen physical media, they try playing a bluray on your turn table then screw about with your equipment because it sounds worse* than played at max volume through the speaker on their iPhone.
Yeah or worse, I find they've dropped something on one of the amps and broken the main output tube.

Actually the breaking of the output tube wouldn't be the worst outcome. There's 1500 volts going through those things!
Have you seen Rita, Sue and Bob too? Might influence the generosity factor?

That's one of those films that would just never get made now! Besides I'mn not married.
