Going to up my running over the winter months and was looking for an hydration vest with a bladder. What are you using?
Don’t want to break the bank for one but don’t want a cheapie either.
Tia.

I’ve always found the Ultimate Direction ones With soft bottles great and prefer them to a bladder on the back. Might be able to pick an older model up in a sale.

Edit. Something like this is spot on.

I've been impressed with the decathlon one. I really didn't want to run with a bladder as I thought i would find it noisy and awkward, but that's not been the case at all. It's pretty comfy and doesn't move about or rub.

The size I have has a 1.5l bladder so not too heavy or cumbersome.

How far are you upping the distance to? Soft bottles are far nicer to run with than a bladder IME.

Up to a couple of hours running, 14, 15 miles or so I don't bother tbh.

I wanted to try one earlier this year but didn't want to spend a lot as i thought i might not get on with it. I got one of the decathlon ones on offer and it's really good. The bladder took a while to get the taste out of and you have to make sure you leave no air in it as the sloshing will drive you mad. I wanted it really for runs over 15 miles when it was very hot and also if i get back to running to work. That's rather dependent on my job still existing in a few months time though! I'd have no issue with using it on any run as I found I didn't really notice I was wearing it after a while and I'm someone who doesn't really like wearing a pack on the bike, I've got a wingnut 1.5 if I can't get everything on the bike which I did also use for running to work. It was ok but nowhere near as good as the vest.

I've got one of these I used for a couple of events. My ultra days are over.

https://www.startfitness.co.uk/salomon-advanced-skin-12-set-backpack-black-l39264000.html

Suits 38-40 chest, comes with a couple of softflasks

£40

I reccomend it even if youre not interested in mine.

The Decathlon one is good too, i have one of those for sale too.

My Mrs bought me a UD for my Christmas a couple of years ago and it's the only one I've used. I like it. Comfy, adjustable, not heavy, uses bladder or bottles. I'm more likely to take it in the colder months as it gives me an option to carry an extra layer,  emergency blanket, gloves etc. It really depends on where I'm running and how far away from the car I will be.

Thanks for the replies fellas, I’m going to be running half’s hopefully but I hate carrying a bottle and I’m not keen on bum bags so I thought I would give a vest a try.
The soft bottles sound like a plan though, think I will try them before the bladder.
Martinb, I’m a 36ish chest, do you think that vest would be too big for me or can I nip it up?

I reckon you’d be a S/M @cogglepin. Most vests can be tightened but only so much. Check on the Salomon website though to be sure.

I think 36" chest would be ok, I just tried it on and the front has a 4" gap , and then the front fastens with 2 adjustable elastic straps, as per the weblink. Its got all sorts of pockets, 2 zipped, a insulated pouch for a bladder, not included.

Like all salomon products, its a lovely thing.

Running 1/2’s shouldn’t really need hydration if you do it properly before

Dunc, aye I know but I often run with my wife as well so the plan was to carry her water etc as well. Don’t think I could do much more than a 10k without a drink though. Btw I’m by no means a seasoned runner it’s just something I turn to in the winter months.

They’re also very good for carrying some spare clothes, waterproof, emergency kit and the like. Especially trail and fell running in winter, wouldn’t go far without some kit.

I have the Patagonia slope runner. Got it for a good price in a sale. Don’t use it much in summer as I’m not much of a drinker when running. It’s more for carrying coat/hat/camera etc if I’m going off the beaten track in the winter.

For running up to 2 hours in winter I can get away with a single bottle in a waist belt bottle holder. I have a couple of Camelbak hydration vests - one that takes just a 1.5 litre bladder and a bigger, 10 litre one that I use for all-day stuff or trips in the hills with spare clothing, hand-held GPS etc. I prefer a bladder as it leaves the front 2 pockets for gels / food / phone etc. I've tried bumbags, but for running on rougher ground I don't like the 'bounce' and that it's a pain because you have to slow to a walk, slacken straps etc if you need to get anything out.

Another vote for decathlon here. Evadict trail vest with 1.5L bladder also gets used on the bike

Salomon Adv Skin (three sizes available I think) are very good but not cheap.

Beware of carrying a water bottle in a bum bag when running off-road. If you slip and land on the bottle it can be very painful.

This, basically. But given you're carrying for both you and your wife I'd definitely aim for a soft flask type vest - the Decathlon ones are fine, there's no real reason to spend any more.
