...really what have we achieved? We’ve solved problems and created medication that may or may not have been made worse by mankind, we’ve sent metal objects into space to explore.
Is all this really an achievement? Was it an achievement when the person made fire 🔥?
Perhaps our achievements are our downfall...

Personally nothing and frankly I didn't even try
Well several million years of evolution led eventually to three guys getting together, forming Rush and releasing 2112......so overall I'd say yes, it was worth it.
PS Rutsey, Peart, yes I know, I know.

The wheel was a pretty good invention I'm sure you'll agree?
I see your point though..the internal combustion engine is pretty good invention apart from.

Also my first thought!
We’ve proved to the owners of the simulation that we’re greedy ****s.
Also that you should never wear checks and stripes in the same outfit.
Without a doubt the best thing we've ever done is making music with a beat.

Is this a local delicacy somewhere?
Without sounding pretentious and not really being into it as such... But has to be art, surely?

I think prehistory would have been a fairly horrible existence for everyone.
Lots of people in the world still on the bread line, that's not good. But I say the fact that I eat well every day and have the resources to choose how spend my time is huge

As I read today - the World’s richest 26 individuals own as much as the poorest 50% of the remaining population. So I’d say we’ve spectacularly ****ed up every step of the way.
Pigs in blankets. Pork wrapped in bacon.
It’s the pinnacle. And a mighty fine one.

I know it’s not the Apollo space programme but pickled onion flavour monster munch are pretty special - they really do taste of pickled onions...!
Clean water.
Electricity.
Affordable transportation.
All great achievements, but only for a minority of the humans on this planet.
It would be great if we could concentrate on feeding and watering everyone, instead of making sure some rich ****s can afford the latest bugatti.
Won’t happen of course.
Look back at Neolithic times and ask yourself would you rather live then or now. You can do the same for pretty much every period in history and you'll get the same answer.

Just like most questions.

We had clean water and affordable transportation for everyone as well as enough grub until we buggered it up and kept wanting more stuff.

We have not been involved in a war with our nearest European neighbours in my lifetime.
The Third World is becoming less so.
We have eradicated several diseases and mitigated others.
We just need to curb corporate power or start eating the rich to solve all the other problems with humanity.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.
It's not turned out that badly
I lost my best friend in a road accident when I was 17
Years later I sat in the Rothko room at the Tate Britain and was somehow reminded that I lost my best friend in a road accident when I was 17. I cried like a baby
I have no idea why. Can’t even begin to understand it. Every time I see those paintings since it has the same effect on me.

the innate desire to achieve could be viewed as an achievement in itself, but also the cause of so much failure.
In response to a previous comment I'd like to point out we have only eradicated two diseases: Smallpox and Rinderpest. Smallpox is the only one affecting human beans.
It's not that we don't have the ability. It's just some humans being barstewards.
I'd love to see us all stop fighting but until caveman brain is eradicated we'll often resort to the punch in the face response before logic.
It’s not turned out that badly
umm. Lets wait until the year is out.

This. Mankind in general I guess we’re on track for ruining an entire planet. Quite the achievement when you think about it.
Put it this way, what have dolphins ever achieved?
or capibara?
…really what have we achieved? We’ve solved problems and created medication that may or may not have been made worse by mankind, we’ve sent metal objects into space to explore.
This isn't good enough? We're the only organism on the planet...maybe even in the whole universe...whatever it may be, who has left this planet, which is the first step to securing our future. The one and only objective of any organism is to survive, and we need a plan to get off the Earth in order to survive...the Earth is a temporary lifeboat for us, it has a finite life and if we are to survive as a species then we need to get off it at some stage. So we've made a good start in our very small amount of time that we've been around. The Dinosaurs were around for 350 million years and didn't do any of this, we've been around for a mere 150,000 to 200,000 years, so were still new comers to this planet.
We're nowhere near ruining the entire planet and wont. The future generations will be far more educated about how the planet works and far more aware about our impact on it than us and previous generations, and the new technologies they invent will be far more friendly to the planet and they'll reverse the man-made environmental issues that we've created so far. The planet can and will recover at an extraordinary rate. This has been demonstrated all over the world multiple times where industry has decimated entire areas and as soon as the industry moves away and the areas are left to nature, within ten years nature has returned and thriving...even in Chernobyl. So the planet and nature is very resilient.
So we're plodding on nicely....100 years ago the global population was barely 2Bn with 95% of people living in poverty...it's now heading towards 7Bn with less than 20% of the global population living in poverty and 50% of the global population now classified as 'middle class'. So we're improving the lives of everyone on the planet at a tremendous rate. That has to be an achievement.
Stop reading the news and the media. All you ever hear about are the bad things which gives you a distorted view of things. Things are nowhere near as bad or dire as the media makes them out to be. Our kids will lead different lives to us, socially, economically, but generally better lives. Go and look up Hans Rosling on YouTube.
Incidentally my top achievement of mankind was the invention of beer. It is so much more than a beverage...it was a catalyst to mankind inventing Social Structures, brought tribes and people together, mainly in the activity of brewing beer..it involves coordination, teamwork and brings people together both in the making of it and the consumption of it. Everything else sprung from that.
We’re the only organism on the planet…maybe even in the whole universe…whatever it may be, who has left this planet
The only? We weren't even the first.
As I read today – the World’s richest 26 individuals own as much as the poorest 50% of the remaining population. So I’d say we’ve spectacularly **** up every step of the way.
Not meant in any way to excuse that appalling inequality but the whole world is generally better off today. There are fewer people living in poverty (actual numbers not percentages) and less conflict (hard though it sometimes is to believe) these days. I'll see if I can find a particular TED talk I once watched that covers this. Oh and yes, Rothko.
Putting on my Civil Engineering hat for a bit, good sewerage and water supply has had an enormous impact on health, and Poopscoop, no you're not being pretentious, art in all its forms is a pretty good measure of civilization.
the Earth is a temporary lifeboat for us, it has a finite life and if we are to survive as a species then we need to get off it at some stage.
The argument i suppose is, is Human life as a species worth surviving?
Being a bit of a fatalist, I’d vote No it isn’t. 🤷♂️
I agree we won't destroy the planet entirely, but we may make it unsuitable for human life. When that happens the orangutans can have their habitat back. As for getting off the planet - I think the above scenario is more likely.

But, just imagine.....
The obvious answer is 29er wheels and dropper posts, which both seem to improve many people's lives dramtically
That and the invention of electricity..
We won't destroy the planet, but we will commit suicide from our attempt to do so. The planet will recover and evolve as always. Until it doesn't that is, and it burns up in a huge fireball or whatever but we as a species will be long gone.
