Now what have the Irish done for us?
(Hic thank you Ireland!)

is the intel guy Indian or American?

According to Wiki...(cough pinch of salt) he was born and degree eduacated in India, did his Masters in New York and worked for Intel developing USB, AGP and Pci express.

Probably an American Citizen if he still works for Intel???

But the Brits still have some of the best Engineers and scientists right? as long as they don't work for BP...
Wouldn't mind an Indian takeaway tonight but need to be in work early and gives me the...best colonic ever?!

Sent us a load of doctors and people willing to put in some graft. In the next decade we'll probably become more closely linked to India as an economy, due to the relatively small psychic distance between us.

They bought the Christy towels brand (who my wife was working for at the time), closed down all UK production, made all the staff redundant and moved production to India. Hurray for India! BThis was before reaising that they didn't actually make any of the predicted cost savings at all, but the quality had plummetted!

So.... Yes Call-me-Dave. Lets have closer links with India. More of this kind of thing please. Jesus christ! When are we ever going to learn in this country

'they' being the whole of India? India's government nationalised Christy towels?

An Indian company. And its this kind of 'closer business links' with India that Dave is trying to encourage. But hey, not to worry. It was just a load of working class northerners out of work. As long as the London Lawyers got their fees and the city took there cut for the financing then its all ok isn't it? Britain wins. Hurray!!

Feel for you Binners as I have seen with it with other companies and Euro owners shutting it down moving it abroad but low pound and interest rates might help.

Maybe the Brit owners shouldn't sell? But call me Dave is getting the investors to put money in and not sell as we need the money from India and China who are moaning about their people investing into the U.K. no doubt!

There are quite a lot of educated Indians coming over to the UK at the moment and working in construction/engineering/architecture - and whilst they're usually technically very good, a lot are not very good at "thinking round corners" and coming up with solutions that don't fit their preconceived ideas.
But on the whole India gave us the financial backing for the Empire that we live on the name of nowadays.

First atomic warfare? (according to Oppenheimer and the Mahabharata)..

Gurkha,
flying a swift and powerful vimana
hurled a single projectile
Charged with all the power of the Universe.
An incandescent column of smoke and flame
As bright as the thousand suns
Rose in all its splendour...
a perpendicular explosion
with its billowing smoke clouds...
...the cloud of smoke
rising after its first explosion
formed into expanding round circles
like the opening of giant parasols...
..it was an unknown weapon,
An iron thunderbolt,
A gigantic messenger of death,
Which reduced to ashes
The entire race of the Vrishnis and the Andhakas.
...The corpses were so burned
As to be unrecognizable.
The hair and nails fell out;
Pottery broke without apparent cause,
And the birds turned white.
After a few hours
All foodstuffs were infected...
...to escape from this fire
The soldiers threw themselves in streams
To wash themselves and their equipment.

I've read that stuey, that maybe it was based on an alien civilistation or the world was advanced and we blew it up and became scavengers but Charlton Heston saved us. 😀

The way i read it is Charlton Heston fathered us all after being stabbed by plagued disciples of Charles Manson. He later ascended/sublimed when he realized we all just ripped of Vincent Price. That's when the apes get their go.

Well, according to the briefest of searches on Google, quite a lot actually.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Indian_inventions_and_discoveries

And a surprising amount of things the West has claimed were invented/discovered here. Seems we have rather a lot to thank the Indians for. Shame the wonderful British Empire ****ed the place so much, or we might not have so many of 'em over here, taking our jobs, etc etc etc...

Perhaps the thing the Indians have given us that is most relevant to STW surely has to be Cockfighting.

Yeah too right. We'd be all right here too if it weren't for them Romans and Vikings and Normans.

Britons were living in caves wearing fur pants before that lot came over and brought civilisation to these fair isles. Mind you, I haven't been to Lancashire recently, so this could still be the case.

Bolton? Don't be silly.

It is however apparently too hot for pants in Primrose Hill, as I discovered on Tuesday afternoon. I'd imagine the young lady might be regretting that decision, considering the breeze at the top.

the only problem I have with any 'foriengers' is that the money they earn in this country, whether they be full time permanent resisdents of tihs country or short term contractor types ,goes out of the country to support family 'back home' rather than supporting the UK econonmy

Why do you have a problem with that? It's their money, surely it's up to them what they do with it. If they choose to help their less well-off families then isn't that a good thing? India was stripped of it's wealth by the British. Britain is a wealthy nation precisely because of it's empirical exploitation of subjugated lands and colonies. The people in those lands suffered because the resources that existed there were denied them, to make the colonial invaders wealthy. What money goes out of Britain in the way that you have such an issue with, is small change by comparison. Why do you think countries like India suffer such incredible poverty?

What goes around, comes around.

Karma? Hmm, there's an interesting concept. Wonder where that came from?

Barnsleymitch; Boardman bikes are made in the Far East, so they'd be no good. It'll have to be something like Bromptonkid.

Allright lads leave it off

D'you really think there's much chance of that on here? I've only been around a week, and even I know that you'll be shown no mercy. The internet is indeed a cruel and heartless place...

Anyway, I will now attempt to answer the OP's original question "What have Indians done for us?"
Manjula at work makes me feel a bit funny when I look at her, and Mr Chaudrey in the newsagents scares me a bit when he tells me off for looking at the magazines for too long. I once spoke to Fred on the phone, and I quite enjoyed that, but other than these (admittedly paltry) examples, I have nothing to offer.

Gulab Jamun??? Oh, I used to go mad for that as a kid! What a treat! She gives you that? You lucky, lucky bastard. And an ungrateful one.

I prefer a bit of Burfi now though. More delicate taste.

By Ganesh, I don't half fancy a samosa right now, I can tell you. And maybe a little prawn saag...

No no no! It's just too much. The first time I went to India, I bought a soft drink called (I think) 'Slice', and that was the same, too much sugar for me. The local kids went wild for it though, so it's probably just me. Anyway, I'm off to bed now, to dream of spending my money on non essential imported items. And touching Manjula where she wees! 😯

For those who are interested in culture from the Indian subcontinent, this Sunday is the Croydon Asian Mela.

It used to be billed as the largest annual Asian festival in Britain, not sure if it still is - but it's huge, so it probably is.

This year will include :

"Wall of death riders in one of the world’s most exciting live action shows! This unique show is an 18ft high cylindrical wall around which performers ride on vintage Indian motorcycles." 😯

http://www.croydonsummerfestival.org/mela.php

It's right on the tram line, so easy access from East Croydon station.

they invented kettle chips. They used to hunt and boil white yorkshire englishmen in great big kettles. But thought they were a bit bland. Obviously. So dried 'em out a bit and sliced 'em up nice. bit of salt, bit of foil, sell 'em back.

I think a lot these call centres that you cant understand what they mean, are actually owned by foreign companies.

When I say "foreign companies" I'm talking about, like British companies - if you know what I mean.

But yeah, apart from that you're right - the Indians have done a lot for us.

Wow, it's almost as if they were...just like every other capitalist in the world! I'm sorry your wife lost her job (not being sarcastic) but it's not really anything to do with them being Indian. The same (crap) decision could have been taken by Germans, Americans, Brazilians, Congolese...

the only problem I have with any 'foriengers' is that the money they earn in this country, whether they be full time permanent resisdents of tihs country or short term contractor types ,goes out of the country to support family 'back home' rather than supporting the UK econonmy

Not sure how you come to the conclusion that immigrants don't spend any money in the UK economy...or why you didn't choose to also mention the "evil" whinging Poms working in Dubai/ Saudi/ the US/ Algeria/ India/ Ireland to save money so they can spend it here.

Or, for that matter, why you're not slating people like esselgruntfuttock for taking holidays abroad instead of in the UK, which is a much more significant cause of money leaving the UK economy to be spent abroad.
