My right forearm has become very painfull, it's now reaching the point where I can't really use my hand. Started a couple of days ago with a bit of an ache after shoveling a couple of trailers of stone, thought nothing of it and carried on as usual ... the pain has continued to get steadily worse. I have a constant toothache type pain and if I use my hand (try to lift even something light or grip) I get severe pain, which I can best describe as a broken bone kind of pain. The arm feels sore when you touch it / press on it too. There's also no strength in my hand and it feels colder than the other one.
I've tried heat, ice and rest ... nothing makes a difference. This might or might not have something to do with it but 6 months ago that part of my arm got hit by a falling tree, hurt like hell for a few days, I carried on and the pain went away.
So any ideas, I'm all for MTFU but it doesn't seem to be working 😉
I feel your pain. I came off on the commute the other week.
Front end when on the wooden path edging, that was covered by leaves.
Initially it was my thumb, but it has now turned into a dull ache just below my right elbow.
I went out on the geared bike and had to change gear with the heel of my palm as my thumb wouldn't work.
I have no pain whilst riding, just lifting stuff.
SS for me then for a bit.
Errm - I might be tempted to take that one to a Doc. GP if you can get a reasonably soon appointment, minor injuries clinic if not A&E if its getting worse.
I'd considered A+E but it's a 100 mile round trip so I'm trying to hold out. I've just put a support bandage on it and it does seem to be helping ... I've managed to type this (one finger) with my right hand 😉
Bernaard - I had a pain like that years ago, kept migrating up my arm.
Wrist to elbow to shoulder... I'd broken a rib, but took about a week before I'd realised the source of my discomfort.
It ain't an A&E job right now - where on earth are you that A&E is 50 miles away>
GP is first port of call anyway
Your just worried about the cold nights that are coming just in time for the bivvy night. 😉
SWAMTFU
Internet diagnosis; some kind of inflammation associated with the shoveling, like medial or lateral epicondylitis, ie tennis or golfers elbow.
Try anti-inflammatories like Brufen with all the usual advice regarding correct dose.
We usually say if you think it's broken it's probably not; you'll know if it is...
Sounds like Necrotizing Fasciitis to me, nothing to worry about - it'll go away with paracetamol OK
I get golfers elbow and tennis elbow from digging/shoveling but that is a hot pain in the elbow and not the forearm. I use brufen gel and support bandages rather than the tablets.
I also have a grip pain in my left hand from a broken bone in my wrist that i didnt know about until a couple of months later (there was no obvious fall to break it just a magnificent save in football!). It shoots a pain from my thumb up my forearm if Im squeezing/lifting (even something as simple as pulling a water bottle out of a bottle cage for example)
Could it be a muscle/ligament damage in the forearm from repetitive jarring and lifting, swollen carpel tunnel syndrome?(yes I had that as well after shifting tons of topsoil!)
As mentioned above, get down to the GP and get it checked out, be better to treat it now rather than leave it to get any worse.
I should have listened to my Mum and got a job in an office!
Thanks for the advice folks ... except you flatfish, obviously!
Go to A&E NOW. Heavy work like you describe can cause thrombosis which would result in a painful, cold arm with reduced power. You need clinical assesment and probably an ultrasound.
FWIW I'm a radiologist and thats what I'd do if I was you.
Having availed myself of the services of the NHS a good few times in the last number of months, I would definitely take infidel's advice and get myself to the hospital. I know how long your drive is and can sympathise, but considering your business and everything you need to do in your neck of the woods, your right arm is fairly important! Unfortunately, it's unlikely to get better on its own.
Let us know how you get on.
Agree with infidel, shows signs of a potential DVT - I'd go to A&E asap. My wife had one ten years ago from sleeping in an awkward position. Definitely needs clinical assessment. You will be taken seriously.
