A small but significant number of our squirels seem to be missing various bits of their tails.
Any idea what happened to them?

Has WCA been after them?

They malt annually. July > Sept depending on the climate. #squirrelfacts

Either moulting, ill or fighting.

They fight, they get attacked by cats and dogs, and they damage their tails. Broken vertebrae can damage the skin and affect fur growth, and they're busy growing winter coats now, so they might just be shedding fur.

Given that three of them have tried jumping under my wheels since last night (on the bike), the suicide squirrel squad is out. They've not been this stupid all year.

yep it's Kamikaze squirrel season.

They're out stocking up for winter and will risk tail & limb for one more nut.

That they promptly bury and forget about. You'd think evolution would have given them a better memory and less compunction to over cater by now wouldn't you?
