I still think it ought to be a basic human right to arm bears

Really not sure this is a good idea TBH.

Excellent example of the kind of armchair psycho who shouldn't be allowed a gun in case it encourages their violent fantasies. 😉

My violent fantasies actually involve crossbows, acid, and rusty knives. Guns would be far more humane.

Try some US forums

Google "every day carry" for starters.

The gun thing is one of the more stark differences between here and the US. Schlepping round Wal-Mart, you've got the chiller section, the baked goods section, the electrical section, the toy section, the assault weaponry section, the freezer section, the... wait, back up one there...?

This thread would be on fire if that new playing soldiers game hadn't come out on egg box the other day

It is odd. But they don't routinely shoot each other. Which is possibly even more odd.

I stayed with an ex-pat family in Vancouver several years ago. I saw the eldest son leaving the house with a rifle case over his shoulder. As a keen airgunner at the time, I enquired what he had.

His reply rather astonished me. He held up a plastic bag full of empty beer cans and said "it's a .30-06 and I'm going plinking." 😯

I was quite happy plinking with my Original Mod. 35...

Buying a gun is a lot like making love to a beautiful woman.... Sorry, wrong thread.

You need to decide what sort of task said firearm is going to be used for. This will dictate the overall type and size of the weapon. You will also need to decide which calibre you want, based on effect and availability of ammunition.

Take the "Walking Dead" for example...

The sheriff has a .357 revolver. Nice gun with good stopping power and terminal effect, but heavy and only six shots. .357 magnum is also a relatively* rare round, so in a zombie apocalypse situation, it's likely to turn into a club after a relatively short time.

"Shane" though, uses a Glock 17 in 9mm. The terminal effect is a lot less (smaller round, much less power), but he'll have 17 rounds to use to stop the hordes (or shoot at people that are slowing him down). The round is a standard, so any zombie soldiers he shoots are likely to have that type on them.

If it were me, I'd go for an H&K USP in .45ACP. I like them, and the pistol feels nicely balanced for a large frame pistol. The recoil is also relatively mild and the effect on target is adequate. Alas, all I get to use these days are issue Browning 9mm pistols. I won't get a Sig P226 (another nice pistol) until I deploy.

That said, a pistol should never be a primary weapon. It's a means of defending yourself when you are forced to reload, or you are in a confined space where a rifle would get trapped/caught up or be of limited use. Factor in something reliable for your main weapon: M4/AR15-based or something else that is easy to source [relatively] high powered ammunition for.

Or an SLR

They do have massively higher gun-crime than we do though (and gun suicides, and gun-related accidental deaths) What a terrible shame it is we don't have their gun laws eh. 😕

In answer to the potential knife attack, only once and lucky that someone else came to my aid and I did have a vehicle as weapon of last resort had I needed it.

As to the rest of you I have no idea where you live but where I am there are gunfights between rival gangs of Afghans, the streets are full of folk from all corners of Eastern Europe a lot of whom are increasingly desperate and not acquainted with typically small town British civilities toward one another.

So no need for a gun then.

I wonder how many people HAVE been shot because they had a gun on them.

Possibly this group of people is less likely to post on Internet forums than the group who feel that owning a handgun prevented them from being shot.

Glock 17 with specialist drum magazine:

Not sure how many rounds, but "a lot"!

Don't know if this will work as done off my phone! Gotta be this gun, but if you don't get him with the first shot he's gonna get you whilst you pick it back up!!

Think you might struggle for a "concealed carry" with that magazine, plus the whole combo is just a touch too phallic for my liking - if you look closely when he's letting off the incendiary rounds, there's definite cupping!

Not a handgun. This is Metal Storm a 36 barreled prototype that is capable of firing over ONE MILLION rounds per minute. It uses caseless, superposed ammunition and an electronically sequenced firing cycle. Bye bye No. 8 bus 😀

True, I was mainly targeting willard's zombie apocalypse situation.

Only a complete bellend would actually want to concealed carry a gun in the UK for real. Despite what some of our more ocular-jointed members say, it's hardly Somalia out there. 🙂

They do, but ours is so incredibly low that although in comparison theirs is incredibly high it's still... incredibly low.

Do some rounding and it's 0x10 = 0

Ruger mk 11 reasonably cheap although there is now a mk 111 cheap to feed, accurate and reliable with all brands of ammo I've used.
