i've been thinking about handguns and realised i know very little about them. is there any experts in here?
what's the type to have? is there a best manufacturer?
not after anything flash, just something cheap, simple and reliable. doesn't have to be super accurate as i imagine it will only be used at very close range. or perhaps something that looked a bit menacing would reduce the need to actually use it. hmmmm...

Is this enquiry somehow connected to this thread?

Planning something, are we? 😉

A nice sig sauer, browning high poweror a beretta 92f. Or robocops. I need to stop watching to many movies. I have held the others though. Too heavy for a 9/10 year old.

Browning high power, don't know much about hand guns but this is the only automatic i've ever used and it is a piece of piss to use and service. And the design has survived over 60 years.

Out of several handguns I have, my favorite is still a Kimber .45 stainless steel model. Easy to take care of/clean and shoots well--and from a personal protection perspective, the noise alone is pretty effective

I got to hold a Dirty Harry S+W .44 Magnum a few years ago, full dirty long barrel and everyfink. Jeeze I could barely hold it up! Proper hefty.

(I'm not a gun nut or owt, I just like the films)

Do you live in a war-torn country

Not exactly--mostly carry it hiking in the mountains for the chance encounter with a thoroughly irritated bear---can get a lot of rounds off fast and the .45 has whole lot of stopping power.

Sig p226 with extended mag.
The weapon of choice for the chappies who like to hide their eyes in photos.

If you have a long midle finger, you'll be able to fire the action off on a browning hi power without having to insert the mag (which often results in RMPs having neglible discharges! muppets)

S&W .357 Magnum with speedloaders, good handling, ample stopping power and accuracy with no jamming problems

Forget all that gangsta nonsense waving a semi automatic about at strange angles, you want reliability with the added bonus of no spent cases laying about

Yeah, that movie stuff of holding the gun sideways is pretty absurd. Nothing like a two-hand hold to really hit what you are shooting at.
I tried doing some of the movie stuff at a target range and it doesn't do much for accuracy

Did Browning not make some bizarre electric front shifter with split chainrings a long time ago or am I hallucinating again? (possibly a different Browning of course...

EDIT- strangely not - " In 1977, Browning Arms closed their bicycle business")

On the one occasion I let a round off with a magnum, my ears popped big time and the kick was such that I thought it would be very difficult to use with much degree of accuracy.

You can tell the people who have never shot a desert eagle - it's an awful weapon that's more likely to break your nose or wrist or dislocate your shoulder than maim your adversary. If I was packing heat these days it would be a Glock gen 4, probably a 17.

I was once shown round a data centre in Dallas. The chap showing me round showed me the control centre behind this big perspex window.

"That window will stop a bullet." he said.
He thought on this for a moment and then gently rubbing his crotch, added...
"'Cept from my .44 magnum."

I shot 5 rounds from a .44 Magnum gun. It was extremely unpleasant, not exhilarating at all. To re-create the experience, get inside a suitably sized metal tank of some kind, and place your palms on the wall of the tank. Have someone hit the outside with a sledgehammer at the point where your hands are. Then have another assistant cut a neat round hole near the edge of a piece of paper with circles on it.

They come in a few calibres, but the .50AE is the one all the "gangsta's" want......size and all that. I shot the .357 version and it was comfortable and easy to shoot, but that was mainly down to the weight of the thing dampening all the recoil. But then my shooting days are long behind me, so i'll pass you to Mr Sage Francis for some words of wisdom:

That sounds like an expensive way of packing heat. I prefer to use economy 7 and some efficient storage heaters.

yes because no one holding a menacing looking gun ever gets shot. fact.

if you've been 'thinking about handguns', maybe you need to think about a few other things.....

Try some US forums. It's full of people who are convinced carrying a gun saved their lives.

I've been in a situation where I'd have sworn blind I'd have saved the lives of me and my family, had I had one. As it turns out a stiff upper lip sufficed.

Much like helmets everyone assumes they "saved your life". The reality is they probably didn't make any odds at all.

Weird thread to see on a uk bike forum.... 😕

I wonder how many people HAVE been shot because they had a gun on them.

Pretty sure I've seen that the stats show you are much more likely to get shot if you are carrying a gun - often with your own gun.

ive shot the dirty harry handgun last time i was in vegas. it was insanely badass. the weight of it makes you think its going to be a beast to shoot, but the extra heft helps reduce felt recoil.

also, desert eagle

I was lucky enough to have a firearms license once pre Dunblane and know a bit about the subject, which, old school rules Revolver = reliability, Auto for flashiness but not quite the accuracy, you have to be one strong mofo to get any kind of decent grouping with those large calibre handguns.

My personal favourite was the broom handled Mauser, cool in a deadly ugly way, I once briefly owned one captured in the Persion Gulf in 1906, came with a wooden case which was also a stock. The gun was also famous as being used by young Winston Churchill, very powerful big stopping power would go through a brick wall.
[img] [/img]

I never cease to be amazed how easy guns are to come by stateside and that girls like to go hobby shooting, (they could have used a lighter load for that poor woman who had it kick her face) it's a shame the only way we can own them over here is illegally and it's a jail sentence if you do, I still think it ought to be a basic human right to bear arms, particularly when you live in an increasingly anarchic society.

It's just my opinion chum, can't back it up with stats, but I was trusted to own one once and only used it at permitted ranges and went through the even by todays H&S standards, fairly rigorous checks and inspections of storage devices necessary to store firearms in the home, so see no reason why simply because someone went mad because he was fed up with being Scottish so decided to terminate lots of other helpless Scots, that I should be prevented from a simple pleasure and the means as an absolute last resort to defend myself or my family from early termination at the hands of some knife wielding thug.

You can't deny me that opinion, I accept you may disagree, but then I absolutely promise I'd never ever shoot your for it. 😉

while holidaying in maine with my sister and brother in law we stopped at an outdoor store. go upstairs my brother in law said, smiling. my god, I have never seen anything like it. Pump action shotguns, assault rifles, handguns, the lot. Crazy. people were buying them like it was nothing. quite scary if I'm honest.

I think the stats show that society is safer now than at any point in history. I blame tabloid newspapers for hyping up the fear of crime.

so see no reason why simply because someone went mad because he was fed up with being Scottish so decided to terminate lots of other helpless Scots, that I should be prevented from a simple pleasure

You could just use an air gun

and the means as an absolute last resort to defend myself or my family from early termination at the hands of some knife wielding thug.

How many times has a knife-wielding thug attacked you and your family exactly? And again, stats show you are less safe carrying a gun than not.

To be fair to derek this country is wrong to legislate for the nutters.

If someone wants to go nuts in a school and kill a load of students they could do it with some cheesewire. But then I suppose it makes the worriers feel more safe if the government blanket bans something in such a way

that I should be prevented from a simple pleasure and the means as an absolute last resort to defend myself or my family from early termination at the hands of some knife wielding thug.

Well there is the small matter that if that "knife weilding thug" thinks you have a gun then he or she will in all likelihood just bring a gun instead and shot you first.

I still think it ought to be a basic human right to bear arms, particularly when you live in an increasingly anarchic society.

I actually tend to agree with this, and if I lived in an anarchic society (lets say Somalia for example) then there is a good chance that I'd own a gun. Actually if I lived in Somlia I'd be doing my damndest to get out but that's another matter. As the UK can in no way whatsoever be described as anarchic (other than by a swivel eyed loon) then I fail to see the connection.

Didn't have a family back then, not sure I'd be totally cool with the guns I had back in those days in my family environment, but I would like to feel I'm responsible enough to own and safely store a small sidearm should needs must.

It's just another example of the State making decisions not all of us agree are sensible.

It follows the sample argument for legalising soft drugs, de criminalising the distribution of fire arms is more likely to remove them from the 'wrong' routes to market.
