What should I put on my Escapade?

Full Bluemels or will they not work off road?

Yeah I have Speedrockers on my CX. I'm considering 'proper' mudguards because I now have the eyelets.

SKS Edge Al, if you want to leave them on. I had those on my Escapade, very solid, great off road. Look good too.

I've got the Speedrockers on my Pickenflick, mainly as there's no mounting points on the frame. Again, very good, manage off road really well. Once set up, easy to take off / put back on.

I've just fitted Kinesis Fendoffs to my Cascade. Look good and no rattles, impressed so far.

Cause I is going for bigger road/grovel rubber this winter(new frame) I went for a set of Flingers, they may weigh in a bit more than SKS but look solid.

I had speedrockers on my London road and they were great.

Kinesis Fendoffs on my bike, they are great, nothing above them gets muddy. I ride it off-road and have not managed to clog them up. The front flap does catch if you try and ride skate park though and I have to put velcro around the rear flap if I put the bike on the car rack otherwise it flaps incredibly fast!

I bought SKS Edge ALs for my wife's gravel but they didn't fit so now have the Speedrockers, they don't look as good but are quicker to remove. My Fendoffs get fitted in the autumn and stay on until summer is close

My gravel bike is my commuter as well and it's got Lifeline Wide full mudguards ( https://www.wiggle.co.uk/lifeline-wide-mudguard-set ). Solid, no rattles but only 50mm wide

timber,I looked at the Lifeline ones but then thought they might be a bit flimsy.
Do they have adjusters built in to the top of the stays?

If you go to pic 12/13 on the Wiggle link ^^ you'll see that the stay attachment can be moved around the 'guard
The stay needs to be cut to length and has 20mm inside the split collet-thingy, so has some adjustment within the attachment
The front 'guard doesn't have a QR safety-release like SKS and only one pair of stays, the rears have two pairs of stays
HTH

Will the Kinesis ones fit with WTB Byways 47mm?

I've had success with a zefal swan on the rear - mostly because it's a cross bike it means I can take it off easily for races.

Front I've used the little mucky nutz things you put on suspension forks. Keeps it out of your face but not off your feet.

If I was leaving them on all winter on a dedicated gravel bike I'd probably go down the mudhugger route. They work on the mtb, if ugly...

Cool ordered, looking forward to arriving at work without the cleaner looking like she wants to stab me.

Even though everyone raves about the speedrockers you should check whether your fork legs taper or not. I've had two rides now where they've rattled loose because my fork legs have a slight tapering. If it happens once more I'll have to get rid as its pointless riding down 'gravel' only to have the buzzing of the mudguard now sitting on your front wheel.

After initially trying a few other options I have ended up with using a cut down crud catcher on the front (my gravel bike has bottle bosses on the underside of the down tube for this) and a Zefal Swan mudguard on the rear. All seems to work pretty well.

If you’ve got the mounting points then use them.

I had to hack my edge AL’s a bit to get them to fit well but they just stay on permanently. 1200km so far and haven’t had to touch them. Don’t bounce, don’t rattle. Bit short to keep my feet totally dry but more solid as a result. I can live with that. Back is a bit short for anyone following but I 99% ride this bike solo.

Focus atlas with edge AL mudguards

Exactly, I bought a bike with mounting points for a reason.

Watch out for toe overlap especially if you have bigger feet or like to have your cleats set further back. Not really an issue on the road or easy off-road but I wouldn't bother with them, apart from an ass saver type.

After my last bike was stolen insurance finally paid out today.. plan was get some more bluemels - that long flap at the back was highly uncool but perfect for protecting the little one getting mucky in her trailer.

Except the bluemels are no longer sold with the flap. Bah. Edge ALs gone for instead, and maybe I'll have to get a trailer that is better at keeping the muck out (even with the rain screen down it somehow gets in!)

Shirley you can fabricate a flap from something? Assuming it's a separate item on the bluemels.

On the mudhugger note (this is the type I've been looking at), is the rear one easily cut down? Looks ugly as sin and also like it would get in the way of leg overs etc. Would shortening it make it useless? Aim is for a more comfortable riding experience rather than arriving somewhere clean.

Biggest SKS you can fit. Chromoplastcs seem to be longer than the Bluemels. Then add mudflaps to the read of both as low as possible. I use relflective plastic for the rear. stiff but you can cut with scissors (just) . You find it wrapped around power poles but if it falls off an needs tidying up that is a good source. My commute bike has them and the are silent ofr the 7 miles gravel/single track and 3 of road each way including coming down the Freeminer/Verderers/Launchpad in the FoD

Sks Veloflexx 65 on my marin with 29x2.0 tyres.
Swapped the front and rear mounting hardware.
Easy to swap between bikes. No issues so far.

This works well https://www.zefal.com/en/rear-mudguards/77-swan-road.html

On my commuting bike with full length mudguards the front was a bit short so I added a "flap" by bolting on one of this type that I had laying around https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/mobile/ass-savers-mudder-regular-front-mudguard/rp-prod164926 which gives additional coverage to my feet.

I fitted PDW full metal fenders to my road bike. Seriously impressive if a bit expensive. They make a set that go up to 700*47, you could do worse. Totally silent, very well made and with huge coverage. Added bonus that they look great too.

Timely thread.

Any other Mudhugger-style options, Aside from the Gravelhugger?

Using PDW on my commuter bike and well impressed. Not sure how they'd be off-road though.

+1 for PDW - used them for some "light" grav grav action and they held up fine.

At the fairly minimalist end of the spectrum, any thoughts on the Ass Saver Win-Wing?

Was looking at these. They look good, but nobody seems to be stocking them yet in the UK that I can see. Direct only from Ass Savers.

Anybody tried one?

Trying but failing to imbed an image

I CBA going full
mudguard despite having all the mounts. These keep the worst off, but that's about it

Zefal trail 55 set, £10 for the set, really simple to fit and work brilliantly.
