[Closed] What general summer waterproof?

My most recent Go Outdoors OEX hardshell has stopped being waterproof after around a year. Tried coating with Nikwax spray on stuff, but after being caught in heavy rain at the weekend it has clearly not worked.

The previous waterproof jacket was a Berghaus (I think) which stopped being waterproof after an even shorter period.

So what waterproof jacket for slightly warmer Scottish summer rain which has the chance of lasting for more than a year? Cost wise, less is obviously better but hopefully less than £10 per month of expected life. Both of which my previous two have failed to meet.

Thanks

I’d recommend wash-in Nikwax TX direct first to see if that works better than the spray. Cheaper solution...I’m sure you are doing it properly but sometimes when people use the spray version they don’t get it quite as even as the wash-in will.

I could give that a go - I used the wash in stuff last year on the last jacket and it made hee haw difference really. The water beaded up in the most part, but still got wetted out & leaked after an hour or two in the rain...

I's sure waterproof jackets of yesteryear were longer lasting.

I never bother, just wear a decent compression baselayer to keep wind off if I get wet, mibbe a gilet, wet is fine as long as I'm warm.

I just buy cheapo stuff from TK Maxx or, if they have nothing in, Trespass - their stuff is cheap as chips and (in my experience) lasts as long as stuff that's four times the price. Customer service is great too.

Granted its pissing it down just now... But I doubt it'll last all year.

Less use of chemical nasties will have had a bit of an impact but mostly it’ll be because we expect them lighter and lighter...

Personally I reckon on always getting a bit wet but more interested in staying warm

Paramo lasts but need looking after. Some find it too warm. My wife has had the zip replaced on hers after say 10 years. No one bother with that on a membrane water proof. Mine hadn't been quite as good as hers but I think fish oil on it didn't help.

OTOH I've a Montane Superfly Event jacket I've been using for over 10 years, the zipper's fine.
It's a decent Summer jacket, I was wearing it over a base layer in 15c heavy rain the other day and wasn't overheating. TBH I wasn't working that hard though.
