I keep pretty much everything apart from potatoes and onions in the fridge to make it last longer. I'm not organised at all when I go shopping and have no idea what I'm actually going to make in the week, I just buy a load of interesting looking stuff. So for example just because I bought an aubergine doesn't necessarily mean I'll use it soon. So putting it in the fridge keeps it fresher for longer when I eventually decide I'm going to cook with it.

Everything.
Carrots and potatoes last longer in the fridge. Yep, onions are in there too.
And bananas. People tell me bananas will go black, but they stay edible longer in the fridge.

everything except fruit.

We keep standard toast bread in the fridge too, been doing it for years, makes a massive difference to how long it lasts.

Fruit in the bowl, all else in the fridge.

That's why you have no room for beer.

None, it all goes in a cupboard. Would put salad in but the salad drawer part of our fridge gets a bit too cold for it and it gets frost bitten.

actually further question to the OP....

how long do you need fruit and veg to last - are you buying it in bulk for the month or something.....

fruit and veg are generally the first thing we run out of - its rare we chuck anything out because it went mouldy....

I put whatever my Wife tells me should go in the fridge.

I have no opinion or input into the whether the location of that vegetable/fruit is appropriate.

Was it cold in the shop where you bought it? That's the big tip off.

for example, pineapples and bananas - never in the fridge

Want to keep apples + grapes longer? - in the fridge

We get fruit and veg delivered weekly, as well as buying some other bits and pieces and never have room in the fridge for it all, despite having two salad drawers and keeping all fruit in the fruit bowl (except bananas which we keep in the fridge so the kids don't see it!)
Potatoes and onions are kept in a cupboard.
Carrots are in the fridge but I reckon they go bendy in there.

Hopefully getting a new kitchen later in the year and I want to make sure I plan in a place for veg to free up space in the fridge [s]for beer.[/s]

No fruit and veg goes in the fridge, especially tomatos. It kills the flavour.
The fridge is for Cheese, wine and beer, and the other fun stuff.

Eckinspain - Bananas get killed by anything under 8 deg Celcius. They're transported and sold at 14deg.

Bananas, oranges, apples, pears, nectarines, peaches, pineapples, etc. in the fruit bowl. (Not all at the same time.) All other veg, plus berries and grapes, in the fridge. There's no logic at all behind this, but it's what we do.

The fridge is far too cold to keep beer in.

trail rat: "strange i never see apples in the fridge in the shops..... "

You're right, grapes and apples are ambient in the stores, but if you want to keep them fresh longer put them in the fridge.

I'm sitting above a store of about 2,000 pallets of grapes and apples, all at +1deg

I keep everything in the fridge bar garlic, potatoes, onions and Bananas, and what fits in the fruit bowl.

Supermarkets may not, but neither would I if I had to go and buy another fridge to keep it in. (especially a sales friendly open fronted job that guzzles electricity)

i guess it also depends on your house ambiant temp....

for the most part my house is rarely above 14degrees.... utility room even less...

my fruit probably doesnt go bad as quick as someone who keeps theirs at 24degrees.

tastes better at 14degrees than at fridge temp as well - we used to be people that put apples in fridge.

okay, I'll find another hiding place for the bananas.

what about hard-boiled eggs - fridge or not?

Potatoes, onions, sweet potatoes, garlic and other similar things in the 'utility cupboard'

Bananas in the fruit bowl

Everything else in the fridge.

Fruit bowl gets a rationing of things from the fridge to ensure there's a few ripe, room temp things on offer.

Fridge gets normal veg in there - carrots, leeks, broccoli, aubergine, courgettes

Used to keep root veg in a box and everything else in the fridge. It all goes in the fridge now and keeps better.

Raw eggs should be stored out of the fridge but hard boiled ones inside - for only a few days though.

Everything apart from potatoes and onions goes in the fridge, makes it last a lot longer.
Wine goes in the wine fridge with chocolate in the bottom drawer, beer goes in the beer fridge in the conservatory for ease of access.

Tomatoes, fruit such as oranges and cucumber should be out of the fridge.
I keep onions, garlic and potatoes in a cupboard.
Eggs should be out of the fridge (they live in a box on the side).
Everything else such as salads and root veg stays in the lowest part of the fridge.
