......for a long weekend in the spring?
Does anyone have any recommendations or advice for a chilled-out, but fun and interesting city break?
We’re not bothered about night-life as long as there’s a good atmosphere and plenty of good food and drink available. We’d like some interesting history / museums etc and would prefer to be able to explore by foot (rather than having to rely on public transport), which also means we’d prefer somewhere dry (non-UK!).
Thanks.
Prague
Barcelona
Amsterdam
Berlin
Madrid, Hamburg, Budapest, St Petersburg.
all good from experience or recommendation!
San Sebastian? Best food in Spain/Europe/World? Not gauranteed dry in Spring but plenty to do and see, if you can drag yourself away from the bars and restaurants. Great walking right from the city too (or I assume it's great walking, it's great on a bike!).
naples - anyplace is as chilled as you make it, but naples can redfine "interesting"
food? it's italy and it's the home of the pizza, what else do you need to know?
history? pompeii
Copenhagen if you don't mind the risk of bad weather.
Stockholm, Helsinki as above
Rome or Prague both historic and fairly small.
Prague, Florence or Barcelona.
Lisbon.
Cagliari is also nice.
strasbourg, bratislava or belgrade (no, really....)
Barcelona and Berlin are my favourites, although Berlin is so big that you'll have to use public transport at some point if you want to see all of it. Barcelona is likely to be a bit warmer.
Sevilla
Madrid gets my vote, for the Prado and the night life.
Dubrovnik. Old town is like a real life film set, unreal.
Oxford
Santiago de Compostela
Helsinki
Venice
This is becoming a list all the cities in Europe thread, which in turn is probably no help at all if you're trying to think of somewhere to go.
To turn things on their heads
We wanted a city break lat spring so we just went for somewhere we hadn't been before which had cheap flights and a good deal on a nice hotel. The location was somewhat secondary. Eneded up in Vienna which was nice enough.
Prague - worth avoiding the night life though IMO - Been to many european cities and this is the only one I want to go back to.
Stay central.... and expect to walk lots!
Madrid
Valencia
Brussels
Bilbao
San Senbastian
Amsterdam
Paris
Oviedo
Lisbon
Rome - You can walk from one side to the other in just over 1 hour
Lots of interesting buildings and museums
Food and drink is amazing as long as you stay away from the tourist traps
You can fly there in 90 mins and the link from the airport to the city is really easy
It will not be too hot in the spring either.
Paris is always a good place to be
Berlin or Paris, in that order. Berlin has some outstanding artistic culture, from municipal galleries to street art and old squats.
Another vote for Rome.
We went in Feb 2008 and had great weather. It was usually warm enough during the day to walk round without a jumper or coat. Evenings could get a bit nippy but nothing like the UK.

Find the Gelateria della Palma near the Pantheon - ice cream heaven 8)
Entry to the Vatican is free during the morning of the last sunday of the month. Get there early doors as you still queue though.
Zagreb?
For chilled; Barcelona, Munich, Ljubljana or Bratislava
Avoid the Nordic capitals unless you like snow and ice
Rome and Seville are both pretty relaxed for big cities.
Granada also pretty chilled out though v touristy.
Another vote for Madrid (speaking as a resident): the nightlife is excellent, some of the world's best art museums, a walk in the Retiro on Sunday morning...
Reykjavik.
Girona
hidden secret of northern Spain. Easy to get to, great (inexpensive) restaurants, nightlife available.
town on a river with a lovely old town
can easily get to Barcelona
oh and it will be warm
+1 for Girona
Wonderful place
Also Granda, Ljubljana
Barcelona (Lovely place at the moment!)
Amsterdam
Salsisbury
Stockholm (If someone else is paying)
Oxford
Bath
Paris
All lovely.
Barcelona is good, so are Florence, Lyon and Oporto.
I'd avoid; Naples (crime and filth), Amsterdam (full of Europe's dregs), Prague (price and full of pi55ed-up Brits), Paris (expensive) and ...
Krakow
Madrid in the spring is a must.
Night life (join the 3am traffic jams)
Museums
Street cafes
Retiro
Rastro flea market on Sunday morning
Great restaurants
Compact (pretty much everything of interest in walking distance)
Atocha Station
Theatre
Shall I go on?
No-one's mentioned Luxembourg City yet!
Great place.
Krakow
Seconded. Plus Copenhagen - genuinely lovely.
Vienna, Seville
Hull
Avoid the Nordic capitals unless you like snow and ice
and handing over vast sums of money for food and drink
