So the last two pair of shoes I have bought have given me a peculiar pain in the arch of my foot on the left foot only. One is an altra trail shoe, the other a La sportiva approach shoe

None of my other shoes cause a pain.

At first I just thought I was unlucky and maybe the shoes were a bit mishapen but having two different shoes causing the same problem makes me suspicious

Is it likely to be PF? The pain is kind of on the outside of the arch but underneath the foot, it feels like its pressing on a golf ball or tube. When I press or rub my foot by hand I can;t make it hurt at all, and there is nothing when I am barefoot.

I spend all day on my feet at work, no problem. My boots feel fine, although I do have 2 or 3 insoles in them which feels good.

The new shoes just don't seem flat enough for me if that makes sense

PF is absolute excruciating agony and you'd not be able to walk. It doesn't go away quickly. It's awful.

i get a similar pain to you in SPD shoes where the cleats are too far back (which means no trendy pedalling position for me), I can just about remove the shoes then hobble to the shower then it's better in five minutes.

I have long arches and some shoes are fine, others painful, and if it needs sorting I do it with fancy insoles. Wider shoes with .ore room, which bizarrely includes Italian ones, are worst.

Sounds to me like they are just bruising your arch.

PF hurts like **** all the time, and tends to be worse when your not wearing good support

Cheers guys, I definitely don't have that level of pain. It seems weird to be the 2 new pairs I bought . From what iv'e read I also don't have pain in the morning when I get up, so again seems unlikely to be PF

Bruising is a good description of the pain I have

It's not PF.  Given that you're OK during the day I'm going to assume it's not a stress fracture.  So these shoes are not working for you.

What did you use before? I wonder if they are stiff enough as that can cause arch issues.

I do wonder if my my previous shoes have been the cause. I generally wear approach shoes or work boots, neither are especially stiff

Whether it's PF or not, getting a spiky pilates ball to roll under the sole of your foot is a great way to flex your foot and ease any tensions

Just had similar in the balls of my feet and along the top of my arch. Taken three weeks to get over it. OK cycling, but excruciating walking. Getting shoes on is very painfull. Tend to get it once or twice a year.

It feels like a Komodo Dragon eating the underside of your foot.

Pf is worse on a morning when getting out of bed and heels hurt too, I don't know about the other shoes you mention but the altras are a zero drop shoe and that can cause some people issues until they are used to them, that may be worth looking into

Which model of altra and what are you used to wearing? It could be that the altra are closer to a barefoot style shoe and you're not used to them.

If you want to get into barefoot, the transition needs to be really slow. Think really slow. Then go even slower than that.

However, once you've managed the transition, you build stronger feet which for me, was the only ling term cure for PF that I ever found.

It doesn't always feel as bad as said,  but when bad it is bloody awful.
