I have no idea yet as to whether or not my bike is okay, but I was just calculating the replacement cost of all the cycling specific gear I lost in my recent accident, and realise it’s going to be nigh on o a fair amount. This is because they had to cut everything off me except my shoes.

In any case, there is no serious way I will able to replace everything, and was wondering about insurance. I have homeowners insurance but no clue if that will take care of me or not (and can’t check for myself right now), a wouldn’t know what sort of excess might  apply. Would anyone on here have any experience of this sort of thing?

Those of you who have written off a lot of kit in an accident that only involved you, have you just had to suck it up? Or has there been a way to replace things that you could afford?

The real answer is it depends a lot on your policy. You got time to read it cover to cover?

If you home insurance has "away from home" or accidental damage included, you may already be covered?

I've trashed a fair bit of kit over the years, but simply consider it 'wear and tear' like the time I went for a slide on Christmas morning dressed head-to-toe in new Assos kit 😀

Ironically, I probably do have time. My body can’t do much else right now! Problem is: it’s in Cardiff, and I’m still up in ‘North.

I would think that the amount I would need to purchase would come to around £250, so not a lot in insurance terms, although plenty for me to try to replace. As I say, though, our excess could be close to that anyway.

i suspect I’m screwed.

I've had written off bikes covered under "accidental damage" twice by my bike insurance. I didn't have much else to claim for but it's quite possible Home Contents would cover accidental damage to clothing and sports equipment such as helmets.

Can you remember who the policy is with? Chances are somebody else here will have the same and can tell you the standard terms.

I claimed on my contents insurance for clothes cut off me following an OTB at BPW. Shirt, bibs, baggies, helmet and gloves. Also my wedding ring that had to be cut off. Mine was with Nationwide, accidental damage, new for old. It was £50 excess, now gone up to £100, but my new wedding ring was £750.

No hassle or bother.

Heal well by the way!

They'll just say it was an act of God

So I might have been optimistic about the number of people using the same insurer...

At least it will be easy to buy Christmas presents for you this year - lots of choice!

Ecclesiastical, I think.

Likely underwritten by one of the big companies though.

No, they're an insurance company. Bit niche though .

Do they cover acts of God?

Edit..: I should really read the whole thread first.

No help but Ecclesiastical are a good company to deal with as a small underwriter. There are much worse companies you could be taking to.

It was my broker that chose them, as they had the best policy-for-cost at the time

Never considered claim for kit but was off road stuff of no great value. Just liner shorts and top cut off, helmet trashed. Only other thing broken than myself was seat and that was only a cheap Charge Spoon.

Think my excess was as much as the kit anyway or fair chunk of it. I could pay for lower excess or just save the money to pay for stuff like this which hopefully is infrequent.
