Had a loft conversion company round twice now regarding a proposed loft conversion.
We are arranging to see some of their previous work.
A google search of their reviews is mixed.
Just looked on the Companies House web site and it states:
STATUS - ACTIVE - PROPOSAL TO STRIKE OFFCOMPANY FILING HISTORY,
28/02/2012 GAZ1(A) FIRST GAZETTE NOTICE FOR VOLUNTARY STRIKE OFF
What does this mean?
I'm thinking "barge pole"
Ta.
i believe it's when unpaid creditors have filed a petition for liquidation.
in fact, more likely that it's an application by the directors themself(ves). so definitely avoid, either way.
Cheers.
So why is the guy still popping round doing quotes for work this summer when his company is closing down!!!!!!!!???
I think they are applying to be liquidated themselves.. not sure tho.
You just ran a little bit of my code to get that information, by the way 🙂
your first post sums it up, i'd say!

Please don't say you are in some way responsible for the mess that is Companies House efiling service?
I wrote some integration code for that pile of poo earlier this year, to be fair the support is ten times worse than the interface
HA!
No, not the efiling service. I know how it works under the hood, and believe me it's a total joke.
What we made was pretty good, but there's an extra bolt on bit made by someone else that does e-filing. If I explained it to you you'd wet yourself laughing.
It means that an advertisement is being/has been placed in the London, Edinburgh or Belfast Gazette (depending on where the company is registered) to start a STRIKING OFF.
From the wording I believe that the particular notice referred to in your post will be one filed by the company or its directors but a check in the relevant Gazette will tell you, which you can do online. (www.gazettes-online.co.uk).
Alternatively it may have been started by Companies House due to non-filing of annual returns or accounts - lots of "overdue" s on the company details page would suggest this could be the case.
This is NOT a formal insolvency process (eg liquidation, administration, administrative receivership). It is a process that a company that's reached the end of its life can go through to remove itself from existence whether or not it's paid everyone so long as it meets the criteria in the Companies Act 2006 and fulfills all the obligations to give notice. It's also done by Companies House to companies that are not keeping their filing obligations up to date.
Since one of the criteria is (IIRC) that it hasn't traded for a period are you sure this is who is quoting for you and not an unincorporated business of the same name (eg sole trader or partnership) or another legal entity "trading as"?
If the company is going to be struck off then I wouldn't trade with it as it's not going to be around long. No aspersions on those involved intended as this is a legitimate way in the right circumstances to get rid of a no longer needed company.

No I wouldn't, I worked on Government Gateway
I think garage-dweller has a good summary there.
Could it be that you are looking at ABC Building Ltd, but the quote is from ABC Loft Conversions Ltd. (or any other similar names). Either "sister" companies owned by the same people or completely unrelated but similar sounding co's.
However googles mixed reviews is probably reason enough to look at alternatives and dig deeper before parting with £.

Companies House have a trophy cabinet in their lobby with a load of awards for excellence in Govt IT projects. I found this unbelievable when I worked there.. then I worked on other Govt projects.....
Good summary by garage dweller.
Also, when you search via Webcheck, have a look for previous names (co may have changed name). The interface becomes a bit sh-t - you can only tick one box at a time.
