as i scan the meeja via this fools lantern whilst sick i see that there are 53000 people in the RAF and yet only 1300 are trained to fly in never mind pilot an aircraft does any other organisation have such a large support function.. oh and there are 25000 civil contractors as well..

Suppose they need a fleet of engineers and fitters to fix and maintain aircraft, they need all the usual secretarial staff, bunches of training staff. Does seem a lot though doesnt it.

Possibly not. How many jobs are harder than flying (e.g.) a front line fighter? I imagine specialist surgeons have a similar ratio to other medical and non-medical staff.
