Usually quite late to the party with 'must-watch' series (or 'seasons') so borrowed Breaking Bad box set recently off a work colleague. Crammed all 6 seasons into last 7/8 weeks or so and watched last one tonight 😥
How good is BB! Not sure what to do without Walt & Jesse now 😉

The wire (not sure if this has been mentioned?)
Generation Kill
House of cards
True Detective
The fall
Mad Men

currently watching the Good Wife. It's very lightweight, but entertaining.

Like everyone else said.

Plus:

Carnivale

Big Love

In Treatment

Justified

(Big Love/In Treatment both chick friendly too.)

If you watch The Wire, the best way to wean yourself off that is to follow it with The Corner.

I've not watched the Wire, no one ever seems to recommend it, but that book is very good!

I'll +another for Orange is the New Black and House of Cards.

I thought that Orange is the new Black was awful! Only watched a few episodes before giving up mind.

We're currently watching Dexter and really enjoying it.

I'm amazed nobody's mentioned The Sopranos yet. So that, and The Shield.

House of Cards is just amazing.

West Wing If you are into politics and left leaning.

Sopranos is awesome but takes a while to get into and it has little action it is just psychology.

Orange is the New Black is another psychology/relationships focused series.

Boardwalk Empire 1920s and 30s gangsters in prohibition America absolutely fantastic.

Game of Thrones is really good as well.

watched last one tonight

We finished it last night as well and I've been wondering the same thing. We've decided to wait till January though, we feel we need a break and don't want to be comparing anything to Breaking Bad.

Netflix must be the cheapest way of watching these series.
Currently ploughing through:
Sopranos spin-off Lillyhamer is fantastic - very funny and great characters.
American Horror Story

If you have Netflix, do try to catch the original BBC version of House of Cards - it's absolutely great.

If you found Breaking Bad's relentless cheeriness hard to take, maybe check out Oz. It's very up and down at times when the silliness gets too high but at its best it is brilliant

How good is BB!

I've only seen a couple of episodes but wasn't impressed. Not sure if they were just bad examples.

My wife and I have a rule - if it's recommended - give it 3 episodes before deciding 🙂

The Wire is the best TV ever IMO but can be a slow burner compared to more modern stuff.

Also try in no particular order:

The Killing
Boardwalk Empire
Game of Thrones
Dexter
Homeland
Walking Dead

All good.

The title of best TV show ever clearly belongs to The Sopranos. As good as the The Wire was, and it was stunning TV, The Sopranos was miles ahead. The Wire had fantastic narrative but script acting plot lines & story development there's been nothing like The Sopranos and of course James Gandolfini RIP 🙁
Just picked up The Affair features Dominic West & that bird from Luther 😉 http://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/the-affair/s01/
Also a mini series called Transparent that was on Amazon prime was great, both are available by the 'usual' means

Tried Southland but didn't resonate, the film Gomorrah is wicked. The French series The Returned was a favourite of mine, soundtrack by Mogwai filmed in the alps & the dam at Tignes features heavily in it too. 🙂

Yes, excellent. A great picture of a homicide unit working in a violent city at a particular time. Without Simon's experience shadowing the Baltimore Homicide Dept for a year the Wire would never have been written. Many of the small incidents in the Wire are actually genuine incidents that Simon saw or heard about during that year. THe co-producer of the Wire, Ed Burns was a Baltimore homicide detective during the year Simon shadowed the unit.

I thought that Orange is the new Black was awful!

I thought that too, but kept going as I had nothing else to do, and got hooked. It turns into a really good series!

Now there is a new Scandi series on Sky, so Wednesday evenings are sorted 🙂
