Something dug this hole under my fence behind the flowerbed.

No claw marks or fur.

It is 2-3 feet long and about 1 foot deep so I suspect something larger than mice and it also moved the log we had placed over a small hole we had noticed there last week so something stronger than squirrels

Rats are stronger than they look and not easily dissuaded from a habitual thoroughfare.

Armadillo, was speaking to a guy the other day who is battling one at his house. Apparently they burrow along the foundations. He lives in south Carolina though.....

I'm going rat. Remarkably strong. Unlikely to be a badger in a garden and they dig bigger than that.

What ever it is, it also seems to be peeing on the lawn and killing the grass in patches

It was the leprechaun trying to get to the fairies in the other garden.

It's what's known as a cockpit. Best not mention it in your LBS.
