Sorry another CV 19 thread!

I was vaguely aware of coughing a couple of times overnight and this morning had a slightly tickly throat resulting in the odd cough; everything settled by about 10 and I haven't coughed since nor do I have a temperature.

My wife and I have been spending our furloughed time cleaning up the spare room and I was up a dusty, cobwebby loft yesterday so probably had a fair bit of dust up my nostrils which cleared overnight.

I wouldn't normally have thought anything of it, but these are unusual times and we all owe it to others to keep each other safe so I checked the NHS CV 19 symptoms which state:

[b]a new, continuous cough[b] – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours[b]

I clearly don't have/didn't have a continuous cough (and probably wasn't coughing for more that 5 minutes in total if you put them all together& lightly at that) but "3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours"? I coughed individually more than 3 times in 24 hours but what constitutes an 'episode'?

I decided to stay in today just to be on the safe side but as I'm recovering from my 2nd heart attack in 6 months (putting me in the vulnerable category) I am keen to get back to daily walks (no options at present to attend another rehab group due to the virus).

So, what exactly constitutes a continuous cough?

You answered the question yourself

this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours

At the risk of being flippant about it.

You’ll know

Fair enough but what constitutes a coughing episode - does a single cough count (which is all I was getting) or is it something more protracted?

I'm not trying to be dense, just clear.

Not being able to stop coughing, For a long time. And in the case of CV 19 its a disease of the lungs - so not a sore throat / tickley cough.

I’m on day 15 and for me it built gradually.
I had a week of mild aches and the occasional cough and other fluey symptoms then it kicked in proper on day 7 and floored me for a week.
Today’s the first day I’ve felt appraching normal. Still have the cough though

Fine, I'm good to go then, thanks. It definitely wasn't chesty.

That’s not continuous.

There is no real number of coughs but it’s probably best described as a regular cough that you can’t settle, many show the seal type bark that kids get with croup. If you are unsure you can ring 111 it’s better than asking a forum of random strangers.

I had a cough that wouldn't go away in February so I asked about it because it was tickly/ dry and I was starting to get concerned. I was told that having coughing fits or repeated coughing for periods of time over days/ weeks is not really the symptom (but...).

You must be coughing all the time like there is something that won't clear and it can last for hours on end and really feels like it wont go away. Now I have typed that I dont think it is as clear as I thought.

Edit - The NHS website says

a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)

The second part seems to have evolved from what I was told 7+ weeks ago

perchy, interested in your situation as wife and I both have had a few days of cold symptoms with night time coughing, but so far nowt else and no temperature. Do you think what you’ve got/had is anything different to a normal winter bug ? At this end we think not so for us, but we may be proven different..

Personally, I'd probably trust the responses on here more than I would 111....

Never tested but I’m as sure as I can be that it was Covid 19

The first week was just general fatigue and flu type aches and a constant headache. Occasional coughing but not sustained and no fever or temperature to speak of. All in all a minor inconvenience no worse than a cold

Day 7-ish it ramped up pretty rapidly. The same constant headache, the aches and pains, tightness of the chest, restricted breathing like at altitude, loss of sense of smell and taste, loss of appetite, Constant coughing, fever, nausea, the shits, the full works.

Thankfully nothing bad enough for a trip to hospital but still a shitty way to spend a week.

The wife was the same but a couple of days ahead of me.
Two of the kids 16 & 11 felt a bit “bleugh” for a single day each.
15 year old noticed a slight interruption in the flow of food but was otherwise unaffected.

Thanks perchy, hopefully a similar fate will be avoided here in the smart side of Lanarkshire 😀

It’s too bloody cold up there for the virus to survive 😉

Hope you dodge it.
