Going to buy a suit tomorrow. Being a bit of a tramp, I've always borrowed a suit for any hatched, matched, dispatched events but thought I would treat myself to one. The only criteria is it has to be a multi use suit, I don't have the budget for anymore than one, and I'm not sure what colour is best to buy. Wadaya think? Charcoal, Navy or Black? I'm 6ft 1 and follically challenged... if this helps.

Charcoal and navy are both excellent choices - black can be problematic - it shows dust and dandruff, and can look really, really cheap - a bit "waiting staff" - it only works properly as a dinner suit (which is better in midnight blue TBH).

Charcoal, Navy or Black

Yes to any of these. IMO navy looks best with a VERY fine pinstripe, while charcoal doesn't need it.
Black, on the other hand, could leave you looking like a hitman, especially with the wrong choice of tie. But you might get lucky.

Dark grey but clearly not black an unobtrusive stripe or check is acceptable but not pinstripe .

Charcoal is a good option, a white shirt and a pastel tie and you're sorted.

Blue opens up tan or brown shoes if you so desire.

Black is a no for me.

Navy. Got a navy cardboard suit; my ears disappear if I raise my arms, but it fits better than my grey thing.

Known as the FBI suit; Funerals, Bollockings and Interviews.

Also, it's worth considering the cut too, if you're not the sort of person who wears a suit all that regularly, buy something classic, then you'll get years of wear out if it - I've got a three-piece pinstripe that's about twenty, and a tweed that's older than me, both of which are very wearable. So try to avoid anything too trendy - very slim-cut for instance, or in my eyes even worse - trousers that are slightly too short (the horrible Thom Browne effect).

But, it's a very personal thing - john drummer likes a fine pinstriped navy suit, but I like them plain - try a few on and see how you feel.

Thanks for the info. I shall avoid the black and go try on some charcoal/navy suits tomorrow. I really want to avoid looking like this fella [img] [/img]

Charcoal, single breasted. Most adaptable imo.

Go for something classical if you are going to keep it but not wear it much. I'd go with charcoal too.

Going to need a funeral suit in the foreseeable....general consensus above is that black suits suck. So do you buy a dark charcoal and make do at the funeral (going to be front and centre rather than a hanger oner) or buy black and only drag it out at other similarly depressing occasions?

charcoal would be my vote for an "all mountain", "quiver of one" suit.

convert, didn't read yours before I posted. sorry. Hope all's as well as it can be. I'd still go charcoal. Hardly anyone wears black suits, so you're much more likely for find one in charcoal that fits you well for a reasonable price. Better to be well turned-out in charcoal than wearing ill-fitting black.

charcoal, black tie, white shirt. Can't go far wrong. Your family may vary obviously.

I think navy is a bit nicer than grey.

But colour's not the only thing, a good cut makes a massive difference.

Marks & Sparks have 25% off this week, can't go far wrong with one of theirs, they're not exciting and they're not meant to be!

I'd say dark grey, single breasted, 2 or 3 button, pure new wool (or wool blend at a push) with fart flap at the back. Navy at a push, but make sure it's not TOO blue.

Avoid these: Black is out, browns and greens are downright criminal. Straight backs on jackets look spivvy. Double breasted makes most people look fat and it's a bit Ron Atkinson.

yes you can - I bought an M&S suit as everyone used to say this, but the lining started to fall out after a couple of week - not for regular wear the assistant said even though it was supposed to be a work suit! It was a while ago though.

Navy - as classic a single breasted cut as you can get away with as otherwise it will age and look old quickly.

Either single or double vented at the back, depending on how it falls.

Wool mixes are better than pure new wool for keeping shape, robustness, etc.

Look for being able to buy a second pair of trousers.

Thanks once again. I'm not spending a fortune but it's always nice to get opinions and advice on style an material etc. I used to borrow a friends old suit.... But then a cousin pointed out I looked like a bald David Dickinson and I've never been able to wear it since 🙂 I'm certainly no 'Bobby Dazzler' :-/

I'm going to a wedding with 3 of my colleagues in the summer, so we've decided to splash out and get new suits tailored especially for the occasion. They're being done in Singapore for under £50 each (one of the lad's mum lives out there).

I'm having my one in Burberry material, one mate in tartan, one lime green and one in purple paisley. We should get loads of use out of them in the future 😉

They are all going to be hand made suits. Anyone who's had a suit made in Singapore will tell you about the quality. We were properly measured up here for them.

Navy blue 3 button single breasted. grey and black just look like you have been shoplifting at topman on the way to court.

not sure 3 button is a 'classic' suit, better off with 2.

He said he was 6'1", 2 buttons ok if you are too small for adult sized clothes.

Men's clothing is so dull and monochrome, it's a shame. Why not purple ?

don't agree - 2 button is the norm for the classic suit - 3 buttons is more 'on-trend' but maybe can look a little more classic if you have a long body.

Dunno about Singapore, but I went into a couple of tailors in Bangkok, and I wasn't all that impressed with the quality of the material.
