What coal for...?

My multi-fuel burner? I have a Moreso Squirrel, and while I can't remember what brand of coal I have been trying to burn lately, what I do know is that has simply refused to 'catch'. Even after a blazing wood fire, when I go to add coal, it instantly cools down, and while the coal does get red, the burn never spreads, and I can never get it to.

Two nights ago, although the coal was clearly burning in spots, it was so cool, I think I could have stuck my hand in to stoke it without getting burnt. Then, in the morning, we found it still burning, but not putting out any heat.

I assume it's just a bad lot of coal, but I would be happy for someone to come on here and explain! I've certainly never had this problem before.

But now I need recommendations: what sort of coal should I be looking for? Where do I get it? And, finally, what should I be doing by way of technique to ensure a good burn?

What does your local Co-op recommend?

I think it depends on several factors, such as manufacturer's advice, the installation and the ventilation set-up

Not all smokeless coals are the same.

something like this perhaps?

We used to have a Squirrel and just used whatever smokeless fuel was cheapest. To be fair occasionally as you say you get a bad bag that isnt great but on the whole we had no issues

We found that the Squirrel was much more efficient as you suggested with coal and a little wood together. However with coal in the vent did need to be slightly more open

Did you open the bottom vent?
It's been a long time since I burnt coal but I remember that coal needs an air source from below (whilst wood only needs it from above) - so open the bottom vent a bit.

Ask at your local proper coal yard? Some places still have them.

We use Excel in ours, lights easily, good heat with minimal ash. Make sure the fuel is dry before trying to use it - some coal yards are uncovered so the coal is pissed wet through.

I don't think you are allowed to burn wood in town, are you?

You certain it wasn't dry ice?

Sounds like you had the wrong vent open. Or you had the fire bed choked sold with ash.

Air needs to go through the coal. Not much more to it.

Unless you're burning anthracite that is. Which needs a certain volume of fuel before it self sustains, but is more controllable than anything else when you get it going.
