What's a good, general porpoise, claw hammer these days?
Classic style hickory handled one for me. Feel much nicer than the metal or fibreglass ones IMO.

Impossible to say - there is more choice than is possible to comment on , or has ever been.
The only way is to get your hands on them and choose what feels right for you - size/price/features?
Just have a good look at them and make sure the face is at 90 in relation to how the handle grip are fixed, a surprising percentage are slightly out and although you will adapt to some difference its not ideal.
I tend you use hammers for breaking things rather than making things so prefer a framing hammer with a longer axe-shaped handle. But as a more hammer-y hammer I quite like the DeWalt 12oz because it's lighter in my tool bag - it has a nice big striking surface for a light hammer - and the claw is a good shape
Vaughan steel eagle, just a nice hammer, one piece metal design. Had to buy a second as the other one walker thanks to a contractor that liked it too much.

must have about 15 or 20 of them.
and if im honest the claw hammers rarely the right one for the work i do . medium dead blow if im assembling something and needs persuading or large ball pein if im destroying something 😀
All the best claw hammer are finds in rubble and stinging nettles. I have one you can have for £50 ono. I wire brush and oil it for you now.
Although tempted with the titanium ones, I've gone for an Estwing from SF.

I have that Stanley one ^^ and its nice for a budget hammer , Lidl of course have a bunch of modern looking hammers on offer in the tools this week.
I think the description on that DeWalt was written by a Hi-Fi enthusiast. I'm surprised they didn't go with "air-cooled precision percussive-maintenance and fixture persuasion tool."
Many have came and went, but my Estwing framing claw hammer purchased 30 years ago is still as reliable as ever.
To be fair I have been desk bound for over 20 years so it hasnt had the hardest of life

The wooden handle on the Estwing is very slippery so hope you went for the blue rubber handle... wood for show, blue for pro!
Estwing with a wooden handle here - its a lot bigger than the usual claw hammers and is really efficient.
i'm a desk pilot these days but have used it all day in the past and it was very good.
