So my wonderful old Mouli Grater has given up the ghost. Can someone recommend an alternative?

Well it beats 'what tyres' that's for sure.

Edit. I've just realised... 🙄

Well done OP!

With that Microplane file what do you do when you get to the end of the cheese? You know the bit which is really small that you can barely hold onto with your fingers before you start grating the skin and your finger nail off.

Mrs bought a grater from ikea, its so sharp you cant actually hold it without drawing blood from at least 2 fingers. I find it easier just to put a block of cheese on to whatever i am eating and keep the blood inside me!

My mother still has one of these from the 70s. It's probably the best thing in the entire kitchen.

That's precisely the one I had. A Mouli Grater. Except that it had a red handle. However, the perforated metal has worn where it rubs against the frame and unfortunately has split. Maybe then I should purchase another one? I just assumed cheese grating technology had moved on since the '70's....or am I kidding myself?

I've just backed a Kickstarter for a cheese grater which is going to be made in a grim Northern town by people who previously made carrot graters.

These are going to be brilliant artisan graters, and it's so achingly worthy...

One that grates cheese the way you want it. Probably can be obtained from a pound shop.

Microplane is the best. Easy to clean, doesn't wear out or take up an inordinate amount of space in a drawer. Get an extra course one for cheddar, and a zester for parmesan. The little bit of cheese that can't be grated on it is immediately eaten, obviously.

Don't forget the chainmail gloves if you're going for a microplane.

Definitely worth it if you value your fingers.

This one everytime, grates straight into the tub so (in the rare chance) if there's any left lid on and in the fridge. Rubber ring on the bottom of the tub to stop slidage!

Ikea also comes with lid so you can store excess grattage in the fridge.

This one is fantastic...

It's grrate for me

In fact the Zyliss potato peeler is equally as great.. (not for grating cheese)

Edit - My mother still has her Mouli grater too.. though it's mostly a smooth perforated cylinder

m&s do a stainless steel rotary grater for about 12 quid. Never used one but it looks good.
