We're shortly to be getting a new cat (see other thread about cat names!) - we'll definitely be insuring that cat, but we figured we should probably insure our current moggy, Megatron.

I did a search, and saw some people on here have recommended PetPlan, so did a quote - coming out as 250 quid a year! Which for a bog standard 3 year old moggy seems a bit excessive - I was expecting 10 quid a month or so. As it stands it's the same as my car insurance!

Is this just what cover costs (I was looking at the lifetime cover, think the option was 'classic +')? Or would people recommend someone else?

Our three are with Animal Friends. About £80 a year each.

I wouldn't go for the basic cover. Plus check the policy covers overnight care if needed. Can be phenomenally expensive and lots of policies won't cover it.

The animal friends policy is a bike vauge about what happens if you don't have a registration document for a pedagree. Our new cat is a mainecoon, but the breeder wants another 100 quid to go through the registration process, hence we're not keen. Reading the policy it looks like they may not pay the purchase price without the reg documents.

Hmmm...

Any other options?

Put £10 in a jar every month.
In 10 years spend £1200 on something useful?

Tesco. We're paying £14/month for 2 cats. We didn't have any problem when we had to claim £3k either.

Pet Plan have been great with our four.
One of ours had a small ailment that escalated over several months into something more major and PP allowed it to be claimed retrospectively. We have found them excellent.
Check with your vet as sometimes they do there own.

Things to look out for:
Existing and on going cover.
Age cover some policies stop or the premium goes up with age.

Fine if there are no problems in 10 years. Or pay £40 a month for 2 years and claim £1500 so far this year, ongoing drugs at £200 a quarter, £90 a quarter consultation fee and £400 every 6 months for ultra-sound scans. That £10 a month is looking a bit sickly!

Dalmatian with DCM, he has up to 4 years of life left, longer if the Taurine works for him.

Petplan, especially if your vet will directly bill for treatment.

Our moggie turned 11 last year and insurance prices just went mental. So now 20 quid a month goes in a jar, and that’ll be used to contribute toward anything she needs and I’ll meet the rest of it. Over the years we’ve probably spent thousands on insurance she’s never needed. Given she only cost £50 in the first place, I’ll probably just trade her for a new one.

(That’s a joke)

PetPlan here. They paid out ~£9k to have both Mr F**cking Expensive's hips rebuilt. It got pricey as he got older (10+ I think) but for us it was worth it.
