I have been told there are now underseals that are much more fluid and easier to put on than traditional waxoyl used to be and which you do not need to heat through.
Any recommendations which I should use?
Any application hints and tips?
Ta.
hammerite, horlicks and sand all mixed together and applied with wet newspaper.
In what proportions... and would the financial times be good enough?
Please advise 🙂
Years ago I worked in a garage and they used bitumen.
I've got a friend up in Orkney that swears by creosote and waste engine oil on his 75 Type 2 Camper. The underside is unwelded and pristine though it smells like a shed in summer.
used engine oil here....
used waxoyl once - seemed like very expensive engine oil that didnt stay for very long.
Combination of water proof grease and old engine oil mixed together in proportions so that it remains sticky rather than runny. Surface dries off and prvides the right amount of ingress into any rusty bits preventing them getting any worse and protects very well indeed, hard to wash off and lasts years although a re-application on areas hit by water at high pressure is useful every 2-3 years.
my mate mixes old engine oil & waxoil, sprayed on. Looked after my cars for years & it works.
He steam cleans before, dries overnight then sprays the mix on.
I have told to use used gear oil or used engine oil.
Other alternative to waxoyl is Dinitrol 3654, 4941 and ML3125 by some garage, which some say is better.
Waxoyl can be heavy so increase fuel consumption apparently.
Chewkw - thanks for the refs.
Bit wary of using used engine oil as I believe its supposed to be carcinogenic.
Grand - best stop puttingit in your engine too .
While your at it stop burning fossil fuels i the engine.
Fit pedals.
If you do decide to use waxoyl spray, get the can good and warm. Hot as you can comfortably hold. Once you've done this, it goes on better and penetrates better.
i did that northwind - my main gripe was that after 6 months there was little trace of the waxoyl.
I have a can of the black tetrosyl stuff that I use for coating the ends of bolts and the metal ends of flexi brake hoses etc to stop them rusting. Not sure I would want to use it to underseal a whole car as it is horrendously gloopy. Might benefit from being heated I guess. It does say not to get it on rubber bits though so have to be careful around bushes and the flexi parts of brake lines.
