This one? The doggy obviously likes the trip as well!
clearly you don't need the jacked up Tonka's that most favour in the USA.
There’s a video of a stock Kia Sedona being driven up Hell’s Gate, which is very challenging, the only concession to the place was a steel skid plate to protect the sump, and decent tyres, and it handled it fine, but it’s often down to skill. I watched a video earlier of one of the new Ford Broncos being driven up the same slope. Backwards! It had no problems, but the driver was hugely experienced in off-road driving.
It’s ordinary people thinking that their crossover can go anywhere who get into trouble, like those driving a 4x4 onto a beach then getting it stuck in deep mud, because they ignored the signs and ended up literally out of their depth!
When we went to Moab we rented a Jeep Grand Cherokee from the airport at Vegas.
As well as being great for lugging us and our three bikes around it was handy for some off roading.
Somewhat against the wishes of my two companions I took it up and down several canyons, scaring the crap out of them.
All went well except that the desert scrub is as hard as steel and both flanks of the Jeep were badly scratched. We went to an auto parts store and explained the situation to the guy behind the counter.
"What's the difference between a 4x4 and a rental?" He asked. We looked at him blankly. "You can take a rental ANYWHERE!" He laughed.
Anyway, he sold us some T-Cut and polish which rectified the damage after a hard morning's labour. The rental company didn't notice though I suspect the paint was a LOT thinner.
I remember a story from John Peel when he was on radio, he took a rental 4x4 outback in OZ. Despite the absolute insistence from the rental co. That he did not take the new 4x4 off the tarmac. He soon realised why. The dash and instrument cluster slowly filled with red dust. I don’t think he managed to polish his way out of that!
