looking to get rid of a knackered a4,and taking advantage of rapid depreciating French motors, had a galaxy before and liked the view from the drivers seat, but are the French motors that bad? tell me about road tax cost, really mpg, petrol? diesel etc ....by the way, theres only 4 of us, occasionally my elderly mother, but I fancy a 7 seater for camping etc, so we could cope with a berlingo type thing too, any advise?

£3k is a minefield, as whatever you buy you'll need to spend the money when it goes wrong and will be in quandary-land. Spend less, just scrap/sell. Spend more, fix.

At this price-point you'll need to buy cars no one else wants to get something decent - so bigger engine petrol cars, French people-carriers and the like.

And it goes without saying, 12 months MOT with no advisories (except consumables). Mileage is less relevant than service history (read up on the big items, cambelts etc) - make sure they're been done.

If you can do petrol check to see if the Honda Stream will do the job for you. Cheap to buy - you will spend money on petrol- but thats it - it will not go wrong.

Petrol Scenic are dirt cheap

A mate bought an original Piccaso for that sort of money and its been great.

I spent 6500 on a Grand Scenic with 35000 miles a few years ago. So now would be in your budget. its the 1.9 turbo diesel

My feeling with Renault is that its electrical stuff that goes wrong so check everything. Our came with no AC but the dealer sorted it out

Pros. Loads of space. We have camped with of use and loads of kit without a roof box. We remove the middle rear seat. We have done 4 people and 4 bikes locally. Good to drive good mpg.

cons. Relatively expensive to keep. Tyres seem a bit pricey. New cam belt and water pump are a scheduled for change on the same service, Ouch...
