We've a neighbour who is routinely holding parties. Huge speakers outdoors, pointed at the neighbours, teenage kids screaming, singing etc. The whole house has a light system that changes colour. Hot tub (natch). Etc.
All well and good, thier choice.
Apart from last night it was 4am before a quieting down from daughters 16th.
I've no bombers, physical threats or revenge just are not my thing.
So, what can you actually do?
Rented or owned?
Probably keep a noise diary and inform local council.
Ask the Cubans if you can borrow their death ray.
How many guests? Are they flouting any COVID-19 laws? Police might be interested
Listen to load classical music at 4am for a few mornings. But probably better to tell the neighbour.
Wee in the hot tub obvs.
Owned, £1m house.
Yes flouting CV19 rules, and have all year.
Thier house is elevated above a whole road, so the big speakers (4' tall floor standing) means about 20 houses last night endured it. We're only 20m from the speakers.
I'm tempted to round up a posse and have a word en-masse.
Put the speakers in the hot tub.
I’m tempted to round up a posse and have a lynching...
I had a similar issue with the neighbour's kids when the parents went on holiday. Parties every night for 3 week days with me and several of the other neighbours asking them to be quiet after midnight made no difference so on the fourth night I went round and turned their power off at the meter. Took them a while to work out what I'd done but it seemed to do the trick.

Take some beers round and join them.
You must have some frozen sausages somewhere.
The police have powers to deal with anti social noise nuisance. After a warning, noise making equipment can be confiscated.
Failing that, start a fundraiser for this.
Start publicising their parties on social media - open to all. if they don’t mind their immediate neighbours knowing they’re having a knees up they won’t mind hundreds of people knowing
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=968yNvFiVH0
All the neighbours together at the door being very polite might be interesting. One person surreptitiously recording for evidence to the council. You'd need to make sure nobody spoilt it by getting narky.
I think it’s environmental health issue. You can get decibel meter apps for your phone. Take some readings from outside your front door and keep a record of times / dates
i was having to do that prior to lockdown - wedding marquee without planning permission has been erected with live music every Saturday and the sound levels higher at our window than they should be at the front door of the venue half a kilometre away.
Start a diary. Record times, dates, people, events. If you report it to the council then you'll be asked to do this anyway.
Daughter's 16th is a one-off though, Shirley?
Daughter’s 16th is a one-off though, Shirley?
You know her name! Were you there?
Call the police. No point messing about. I did on a neighbour about 9 years ago who had what sounded like a live band at 2am and people out in the road. They even put a portaloo on their drive to cope with the amount of people.
The police were there within an hour and shut the party down. The house owners are nice people but we all need our sleep.
If they do it again I'll call the police again.
Took them a while to work out what I’d done but it seemed to do the trick.
Brilliant idea!
You must have some frozen sausages somewhere.
As its north of the border the protocol is to hammer frozen sausage dogs into their lorne

Lottery winners?
🙃
Words have been had.
Fellow STW'er and I went round for a chat.
Apparently the kids have had a tough time over lockdown and we should cut them some slack. Also 2am was thought to be reasonable. Also suggested that they never point the speakers out and rarely have a party.(!)
We've made our polite point that we consider 11-12pm a reasonable limit, and that they should consider carefully the speakers etc etc.
I'm not sure they want to listen, or actually care.
There's not just us but others in the street who will now just call the police.
I do also like the announce a party on social media idea. 😈
Shot gun blank bird scarer and a Lazer pen #snipersdream
Just to play devil's avocado; how routinely is routinely? 16th birthday party on a Saturday night can be tolerated no?
I do sympathise though. I'm not bothered by party/music noise at night personally. But the constant racket of power tools going off pretty much all day every day drives me nuts.
Loud party... 2 stroke hedge cutter nice n early or bonfire with loads of wet grass?
Saw a thread on a another forum over similar.
Ended up with a bit of argy and then a mystery neighbour stole the roof from the partying houses garden bar.....
Just to play devil’s avocado; how routinely is routinely?
Most months they have some kind of big shindig.
In between they have some much quieter gatherings.
Fair enough then. Subhuman scum. I'll grab my pitchfork and join you down the front.

If you haven't involved the Police before now for this, you've been too easy on them already.
The council should have noise abatement team. Contact them next time a party is on. Failing that make sure you have a party all the next day once they’ve went to bed! It’s what I used to do with my noisy neighbours. I’d place a speaker on top of the wardrobe which was below their bedroom then go to work for the day! They’re not getting any sleep if I’ve not!!
How many neighbours are onside and have two stroke bits of gardening kit? 0700 seems a reasonable time to strim, cut grass, chainsaw that old stump etc.
Just move. Life is too short.
So, what can you actually do?
https://stirling.gov.uk/community-leisure/safe-communities/domestic-noise/
I suggest keeping a log and calling them in office hours to understand how you should report problems after 10pm! (I love the fact they only work until the time at which noise starts to become actually irritating!).
Yes flouting CV19 rules, and have all year
Would have been far easier to deal with if you did it before rules relaxed! Now, unless its massive you are just asking someone to sort the noise not covid issue! I doubt you are going to get high up the priority radar calling the police at 1am to a party in Dunblane.
My father had a different way of dealing with neighbours who did this sort of stuff... it involved a chainsaw at 8am the following morning (an air cooled 2 stroke engine is just the right tone to make a hangover truly awful). I think its possibly the only time he encouraged teenage children to make a lot of noise too!
I have always dreaded loud neighbours and have been fortunate so far. However I do have something in my arsenal which I could use to fight back - one of my closest friends is a sound and lighting production manager and owns/has access to concert filling sound hardware, industrial lighting rigs and is qualified to use heavy duty pyrotechnics and commercial fireworks. I could threaten them with WW3 levels of disturbance and could deliver on the threat!
Discovered that too late.
For the record, all grace has been eroded now. Any noise beyond 10pm and the Council and police are being informed. I've a diary to record things and a sound app on the phone for decibels.
Do you know when the next party is due to be? Perhaps I (and the rest of the forum) could join in the festivities?
Think I’ll give the hot tub a miss though.
Next party an anonymous call to police saying there is a group session in the hot tub with people who appear to be young teenagers...
If you do take up DickBarton’s suggestion above, please make it clear to the police I will not be in the fetid sex pond.

On a vaguely related note - an old friend of mine used to do night-club visuals - when it became apparently that the house across the road from him was being operated as a brothel (to be frank every third house was a brothel round there) he'd amuse himself back-projecting images of Hattie Jaques onto their curtains
Ooh Matron!
My elderly neighbours have decided to grub up some Laurel and plant some beds up with bedding plants which the local roe deer has eaten. To prevent this from happening again instead of fencing the deer out like I’ve done they have invested in an ultrasonic deer scarer which is neither ultrasonic or just an irritant to deer. It’s pointed at my property and has a double high pitched whistle that goes off continuously. It’s not super loud but can be heard all over our garden and is a pitch that is obviously designed to irritate as it hurts the kids ears and annoys me.
I popped over and nicely complained only to be to,d it’s ultrasonic and you can’t hear it. They can’t actually hear it themselves as they’re old and deaf. She said she’d turn it off in the daytime but keeps forgetting so I popped back over to ask again.
She then said it’s no noisier than my chickens ( I have 3 and have had chickens, no cockerels for at least 17 yrs and nobody’s ever mentioned anything!).
She’s left it on all week. As it’s been variable weather I’ve just stopped going out in the garden. I heard her demonstrating it to her son a few weeks ago and he said the noise is horrendous. She just doesn’t give a s£&*.
She’d be the first one to moan about and yoofs making a noise.
She said to me that it’s not her problem and if I can hear the noise I should take it up with the manufacturer.
I keep thinking I could jet it with a hosepipe overnight or something, hit it with a tree branch perhaps.
They can’t actually hear it themselves as they’re old and deaf.
So they won't know if you turn it off?
ask nicely. pop round and say look it went on a bit long last night. if it keeps happening say that if they dont stop youll have to do something about it.
then set fire to their cars or something.
If were having a party i let the neighbours know.
Re the deer scarer. Expanding foam will sort it out , quitens everything
Re the party , it is an EHO issue . Me, I would have done an annonymous letter along the lines of. Ok , next time at 00.01 I will ring mr John Smith the local EHO officer on 01234 567 890 . He will turn up and remove your speakers. I will also ring PC Michael Jones, the local bobby on 1234 345 678. He will turn up and fine everyone for breach of covid reguations.
I dont get the one off thing. Being rude and noisy knowing you are upsetting everyone for 1/2 mile is so entitled . Having the front to invite loads of randoms round for covid party is right up there as well. plus the kids are 16. party from 8 -11pm is more than long enough for them to get smashed on Monster and Vodka , get an STI , throw up and be picked up my Dad and e be sick again on the back seat .
@burko73 that is horrific! I would be complaining to environmental health given that you've tried to sort it amicably and got nowhere.
Just did a quick look at these products on Amazon and one of the reviews says:
Great if you want to upset your neighbours or teenagers with sensitive hearing. My wife couldn’t hear it but my neighbour across the road had a meltdown and my teenage son threatened to smash it if I didn’t turn it off.
Didn’t even find out if it works on cats!
There do seem to be some with a sensor that triggers the sound on movement, maybe worth suggesting to them but it sounds like they don't really care anyway.
I feel like it's the kind of thing that could be stressful even if you can't/can barely hear it, what a horrible concept - like permanent tinnitus whenever you use your garden 🙁
Mrsmf insisted on buying one of those things once, under the guise of a 'dog bark trainer', which did nothing to deter the animals it was meant to deter from barking, in fact they seemed to get annoyed and bark even more, on top of it being massively irritating for humans (i.e. me).
If you nip round and detach the speaker they will never know, not that I'm recommending such behaviour.
Its always disappointing when those that live around you have no consideration. If you want parties every few weeks, move into the middle of nowhere.
My next door neighbours have one of those sex baths. They used to quite often be in it until the early hours. Not a major drama, until they get boozy, have friends in it and decide to shout over the sound of the pump. That was until one evening i had had enough, swung open the bedroom window and shouted at them to 'shut the F-up'. Which they replied 'OK'. I proceeded to tell them it wasnt ok and they had no consideration for anyone else.
Needless to say, they are much more considerate when using it now.
I am all for people enjoying themselves, life is too short. But dont do it at the determent of those around you. Unfortunately, as life seems to be more and more these days, some people are just weapons grade nobheads.
There was a thread (on here I think) where a sound engineer installed some kit and at the designated time started playing the noise back to them very with a slight delay making it sound rubbish. I always thought it was a great solution "I am only playing the same stuff as you at the same volume, why is that an issue?"
Putting 2 and 2 together, why not just buy a deer scarer from the tax fiddling website of choice and install it to be on when your neighbour has young uns around? Same principle as the Mosquito anti loitering device.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mosquito
Or, buy several deer and set them loose on the neighbours property at night. They make a huge mess.

You mean this.
And it was glorious.
https://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/2am-party-pooper/
It has been deployed several times since. In fact one of the neighbours told a friend who then commissioned our sound engineer neighbour to do the same thing at the bottom of his garden to affect reduction in weekly piss ups that were annoying him.
I'll ask him exactly how he did it, but as far as I could see the kit was microphones on tripods, a pair of naff off speakers also on tripods, an amp, and his laptop.
Expanding foam will sort it out ,

Next party an anonymous call to police saying there is a group session in the hot tub with people who appear to be young teenagers…
...and someone who you believe to be Michael Barrymore has been seen lurking around.
Do you have to be in the fetid sex pond to contribute to its fetidness or could it be added to from outside it's slurried confines?
Try living in a mid terrace with a neighbour off his face reliving the 90s at 2am.
16th birthday party on a Saturday night can be tolerated no?
Depends, do I need to be up for a shift at the back of six? Any neighbors on call firemen or such? I don't care who or why, there's no need to be carrying on at that time in a residential area. I've done my share of partying but after midnight we cut the loud shit out.

Onehundredthidiot's neighbour later....

Yep the deer scarer is slowly driving me nuts. Lucky it’s been such rubbish weather. I’ve thought about climbing over and doctoring it but getting caught, they may have a camera, isn’t going to help.
It does have a movement trigger setting but I’m pretty sure she doesn’t know how it works or just doesn’t give a sh&t as she can’t heAr it she just thinks I’m nuts. The kids hate it and it must irritate them as I thought my hearing wasn’t great and it irritates me.
I might get a catapult and fire a frozen sausage at it!
