So off to Japan for three weeks and looking at another camera...we have a Nikon d40 with a couple of lens the one that gets the most use is the 70 to 200.

I need to get another camera as we both tend to hog the SLR. Neither of us is a photographer but wanting to learn so it is a mix of auto mode and playing arounso what is a good option for us? Smaller size would help aa well

SLR new or secondhand?

Bridge camera no idea what that is

Mirror less a gain have heard about it but no idea

Budget is say 350 but it will not get masses of use so cheaper the better but also like to have things that last

All help welcome

If you want ultimate portability/convenience then I'd offer another shout for the RX100, I have a mk1 which is great (fantastic video and is especially nice at the wide end at f1.8). My friend picked up a Canon G9x this week and that also handled really well and looked nice in silver/leather effect

If you're happy carrying an SLR around, then the Nikon D5500 has really impressed me (to the point I sold my D7100 and use GFs D5500 instead). The D40 could be relegated to backup and you could use all your existing lenses.

either of us is a photographer but wanting to learn so it is a mix of auto mode and playing aroun

Make a decision as to whether you want to actually learn, then either take the dSLR out of Auto mode or sell it. Otherwise you're carrying a big daft camera around when an iPhone will probably do as good a job. The whole point of a dSLR is that it gives you creative control.

Fair point but it was about asking for something more than a iPhone camera and something that will offer better quality photos with that balance of portability.....as well as priced within the budget

If you've already got a couple of Nikon lenses, why not get another Nikon body and just swap between them with different lenses on each?

You could easily get a D90 within your budget...

Nikon D3300 would be plenty of camera for your needs if you want to go for an SLR.

However, I would say the best camera to take is the one that you'll have with you all the time. I personally would therefore have a good pocketable camera for the times a DSLR is too bulky for you to want to carry.

The D40 is a good camera and 6Mp is more than enough to get excellent prints from. No need to change it for anything with more Mp - it will just use up card space. Spend a bit on plenty of cards and a spare battery.

Have a process for backup/archiving if you plan to take plenty of pictures.

Rich.
