Daughter would like a camera as she's keen on starting vlogging her makeup/fashion stuff.

She's focussing on a half decent camera for it, but I'm open to suggestions whether something more gopro-esque would be better, and whether that's achievable on her budget.

As you can imagine with makeup, the video and stills need to be quite detailed so after advice on what's best for the buck...

Get a Nikon D3100. It's a fantastic camera and can film in HD. It's a fairly small size for a DSLR and light weight.
I picked up mine as new for £120.

Does she want to start a photography hobby or take a couple of glorified selfies? Unless it's the former I'd probably avoid a dSLR and get something more suited to what she needs.

Sounds to me like a GoPro is the better solution, unless she wants a camera for other reasons (and I can't even begin to imagine what a teenager might want with a digital camera...)

thanks, it'll be used as part of an online portfolio, she's got quite a talent for both cosmetic makeup and sfx, so she's creating vlogs for both.

so, yeah, glorified selfies, but in a semi-professional sense.

If you've got decent lighting you can get very good photo's from a top Smartphone. I know the iPhone 6 beat a £200 camera in some tests, the only let down was the lack of zoom.

Panasonic Lumix TZ35 would be a pretty good start. Stupidly cheap now for what is an excellent small camera. Picture quality is superb. Yes, a DSLR will allow you to experiment more and be more arty with picture taking but if her main aim is to capture good quality pictures of things she is doing a part of a portfolio rather than becoming a photographer then I would suggest a DSLR will be a lot more bother and likely get in the way o what she is trying to achieve.

Has she got a suitable computer for editing, etc?
One option would be get a phone with a great camera on it.

The other route would be get a cheap (second hand) SLR with HD video and add an external mic. Not sure it's within budget though.

The in-between option of getting a compact camera, might just end up being the worst of all worlds (hard to share footage/pics, still needs processing/editing, sound will still be shonky).

If I personally were buying a compact camera right now though in that price range, it would either be the Canon S110 (or later), Lumix LX5 (or later) or Sony RX100 (or later).

great thanks,

not keen on a new phone just yet, her moto G is doing well.

The lumix looks like a deal, is there something similar with wifi/bluetooth or the like?

PC wise, she has a laptop, we've not explored what to use on that yet.
