Need a new one and have had a quote from British gas...Ouchy!!

So, what would you have fitted based on these specs/requirements:

1800sq/ft 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms (both with baths & showers) and 1 toilet downstairs.

Currently have approx 14 litres/min flow.

Need to be able to run 2 baths/showers at the same time (one bathroom has electric & mains shower so thinking could do away with the mains one and fit a good electric?) and stuff like washing machine/dishwasher etc.

It seems that MrsD wants to be able to use all of the water outlets at the same time.

We'll be having new rads too.

Worcester Bosch combi's for me. I have two of them. An upstairs one and a downstairs one.

The upstairs one was installed in 1999 and hasn't missed a beat. THe downstairs one was installed in 2015 to replace the previous WB which had been there since 1986.

British Gas will not provide the best value for your installation*. Get quotes from other sources.

Google Mr Central Heating for indicative costs for the kit and add a markup for the kit and £600-£700 for the labour to get an idea of what your install should cost.

*understatement of the century

That at was your first mistake.... find a local independent and get some quotes. Get them to detail how they plan to box/route pipes etc. There should be some tools online that allow you to spec the size boiler. Drop in you requirements and it will output the size that will do the job. Add 25% min as you don’t want to run it at the limit or have to endlessly maintain as performance drops with time.

We're not planning on using BG but they offered a free estimate so thought it would give us an idea of what would be best.

I have a couple of mates who are heating engineers so they will be quoting on it too and will be going with one of them.

Was just wondering, really, what type/size of boiler would be best for our application based on your experiences.

Or rather what the surveyor thinks will get them the highest commission.

why in the world would you need to run all the outlets at the same time ?

your washing machine and dishwasher dont run off the boiler - certainly not for the most part anyway unless you have some wierd set up.

expect to pay if your setting up for the armegeddon - put a good electric shower in the second bathroom and leave the mains one in your main shower then everyone can shower.

Im struggling to see a situation why two baths need to be run simultaneously unless your actually running a 4 bedroom BnB

while its a nice to have youll be massively over spec'd for your needs.

I know, I know....it's the wife.

She wants to cover every eventuality for some bizarre reason. Hopefully my friends will  be able to tell her she's being a bit of a muppet 😉

shes probably experianced the other end of the spectrum where some landlord has specced the cheapest boiler he can get to feed the rads.... and neglected waterflow so it takes an hour to run a bath and if your showering and someone does the dishes you freeze when ever the taps turned on.

you can get a happy medium.

We have a Veissmann. Faultless in nearly 10 years of operation so far.

Don't just think about the boiler.  How are you going to control it?  Lots of options.  I would definitely look at EvoHome or equivalents.

MrsSB washes her hair in the bath and it takes time, so if I want a bath I use the other bathroom..... two baths running simultaneously.

We also have 3 teenage girls so both showers are frequently running at the same time 🙁

In fact we fairly often have both batshs and a shower running at the same time!!

So not that unusual

OP... does it have to be a combi?  You may struggle to meet your requirements if that is the case.  An unvented cylinder would do the job though.

Dishwashers and washing machines only have cold feed nowadays so the only influence they have is on the flow (and even then they don't use much water) ..... again an unvented cylinder would fix that.

We have a combi and 5 bed 2 bathroom, 1 toilet, etc

I wish we had gone the route of a pressurised hot water system.  It (boiler/water pressure) cannot supply 2 showers at one time.

Also you may want to consider if solar could heat your hot water cylinder??

Just started a plumbing/gas safe course and the tutor says Vaillants are the new best with WB in second.

Whatever you do don't buy a Biasi apparently.
