Present time isn't it.
Their Parents have asked for board games and my only experience of these are many years ago when i was young.
i'm thinking there are fun things out there for grown ups to play too. or am i overthinking this?
There must have been some new ideas since buckaroo and hungry hippos?
What games out there are fun for a family to play with a 4 year old?
I love catan (thanks for the original rec cougar), and 8yr old Jr and I enjoy it. But I haven't yet bothered playing it with 5yr old Jr yet. He just isn't ready.
For him, connect 4, guess who, top trumps are about right
me and my 4yo love playing dominos, snakes and ladders
The Orchard Toys range a quite good, Animal Safari is quite popular in our house
Tactile ones might be good. Push a Monster, Cat Tower, that sort of thing.
edit: I've just realised you can't actually buy either of those...
Me and My 4 year old play Sushi Go!, we started off with simpler rules (just matching pairs) but now she plays the full rules.
Her uncle got her Brain Box - The World which I would've thought would be too hard for her, but she manages well as long as you help her with the reading. It also came with a 5 card demo of Name 5 which is fun, but I don't think I'd pay £20 for it.
We have Roll for it! on order which should be here soon. Looking forward to playing that one.
I would also like to get Tsuro sometime.
* A couple of those links are from Amazon.com. Board games are way cheaper in the US than they are over here. If you are buying one or two, it is often cheaper to buy from the US than it is over here. Amazon.com can give you the price in GBP and will reserve funds for taxes if they need to be paid too.
Dobble is very good.

Colourful, fun, doesn't last too long, co-operative (So you don't have to try and lose all the time). Needs a bit of floor space though.
A holiday house we stayed in had Sorry. Our kids loved it so much we bought it - a great game.
Frustration is a big hit with my kids.
Guess Who.
Says 6+ on the box, but you can "help".
What about classics like kerplunk or hungry hippos?
too much setup timeWhat about classics like kerplunk
too noisyhungry hippos?
But if you dislike the parents yeah go for it 🙂
Snakes and ladders works for our two.
+1 for Guess Who, but try to get something akin to the original version not some crappy modern version with lights and annoying sound effects.
yeah: guess who, or snakes & ladders, connect 4 - all playable of a fashion by a 4 year old.
I second the Orchard Toys stuff - our two loved the Dinosaur Race game.
They also enjoy this one but it can be a bit complimicated http://www.smythstoys.com/uk/en-gb/toys/games-puzzles-books/c-564/childrens-board-games/p-3557/the-magic-tooth-fairy-board-game/
Ohh, and this bonkers game too - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Elefun-Motorised-Butterfly-Catching-Game/dp/B0002HNMUQ (and it's great for practicing hand/eye co-ordination).
+1 for Dobble
Cranium cadoo for kids was a blast when ours were that age..lots of running round the house finding things, drawing things etc.
I love catan (thanks for the original rec cougar), and 8yr old Jr and I enjoy it. But I haven't yet bothered playing it with 5yr old Jr yet. He just isn't ready.
The link ^^ up there is the kids' edition; supposed to be for ages 4+. Comes with nice wooden pieces they can shove around going "choo-choo" if they're too young to actually play it.
Disclaimer: I know nothing about it beyond the fact it exists.
Stoner > Carcassonne next, then? (-:
already got carcassone. Toying with pressing buy on the +5 big box. One for home, the other is left in the flat in France.
