There's a bird outside the office at the moment that is making a noise a bit like a creaky gate being opened. A really high pitched squeak every 2 seconds lasting about a second. Any idea what it is, and if I can shoot it?
Could be the lesser spotted creaky-gate bird. Very rare I understand 😆
Sorry
am I the only one expecting, from the title, the rest of the post to be some sort of punchline?
Sounds like the sort trying to scare a close-by cat away.
I was expecting the first reply to be ....."The missus!"
yellow hammer
Baby Robin?

A Great Tit makes a sound a bit like a squeaky stirrup pump, or wheelbarrow wheel. Not sure if that's similar to a gate...
How bizarre. I wrote Great T1t and the swear filter makes it look more like Great ****t - or anything else with four letters anyway.
Apparently the Coal T1t also has a 'sqeaky wheel/gate' call:

I still reckon it is a baby robin
could be a squirrel? has anyone heard a squirrel screaming before? sounds strange
So you can say "Great Shit" but not "Great T!t".......... I'll be ****ed if I can understand this swear filter 😕
btw, I think Shags sound like creaky gates.............am I allowed to say "shag" ?

.....ok, maybe it's a bit more like a creaky barn door 💡
I used to think the magpies outside my house were someone dragging a stick along the wire fence. So probably not a magpie.
We have got one that sounds exactly like a phone - what's that then?
The dialling tone or the ring tone ?
ringtone - freaks us out.
Starlings mimic telephones and car alarm pips. Pain in the ass when you run inside and its not really the phone.
Pain in the ass when you run inside
Surely the clue is that the phone is ringing outside ?
Or do the starlings sneak indoors for added comic effect ?
😆 At ernie...
Starlings stick their heads in open windows, 'ring', then bugger off. It's the bird hooligan equivalent of ringing your doorbell and running away.

Snap. We call ours telephone bird. I think he's related to another bird in the garden that we call alarm clock bird.
