Make your 5 commitments now. I will start with:

A) 52 rides of over one hour - commuting doesn't count
B) Replace the Wedge body on my TVR to a 50s/60s sports car look
C) Get the skills area built in Southampton Sports Centre
D) Do some jumps without feeling scared
E) Don't by another bike unless one of the current lot seriously breaks

I want to do the C2C from Walney Island to Whitby - 2 days and lovely scenery
Get fit enough to do the above
ride the CRC Marathon events at a better level
learn to ride switchbacks properly
learn to accept that my life is actually pretty alright 🙂

I've got seven.

1. The Haute Route stage 1
2. The Haute Route stage 2
3. The Haute Route stage 3
4. The Haute Route stage 4
5. The Haute Route stage 5
6. The Haute Route stage 6
7. The Haute Route stage 7

Or you could argue I've just got one.

1. Learn to drive (boring, but I am 28 and relying on the trains/buses is starting to grate).

2. Sportives - NoFuss Glen Coe sportive in under 6 hrs, Bealach Beag in under 2:45, Cairngorm Classic in under 5. Not massively ambitious times but given my sporadic approach to training I'll be happy if I manage them.

3. Munros - I don't want to commit to a number because that sort of approach seems to preclude some good routes, although doing another 50 odd to reach 100 is reasonable. Certainly want to do Cruachan via the northern ridge, the Bridge of Orchy hills from Gorton bothy, the Lochaber Traverse to Nevis, and maybe the ridge from Victoria Bridge to Starav, with Trilleachain thrown in the next day if I have time.

4. Camping - One big two week-er with the rucsac, starting Glenfinnan and finishing where-ever the weather and the hills dictate, preferrably Torridon.

5. Move to Vancouver (the wheels are in motion already). 8)

Edit: Thinking about it, saving for #5 would realistically make reaching 100 munros a bit optimistic. Lets say 80. Edit edit: Or maybe just 75..

13FM,

Wow on no. 5! Might make no.3 a bit trickier, even if you manage no. 1... Good luck with all of them.

I've only one goal so far - Raid Alpine in July (=hottest time of the year = planning fail).

Other, more nebulous, goals involve not being so miserable and negative.

If it happens Stuartie, if! Just need to keep her interested via skype for another 7 months, and hope the invitation remains open! 😀

Can't say I'd noticed the negativity, you obviously keep it off the bike anyway. Need to grab a hill or two with you in the new year.

1) Do a 24h race (I've never done one... or any race for that matter).
2) Swap the P7 for a 100mm travel steel hard tail (R8 maybe?).
3) Save some money (no.2 might ruin that... also not having a job might ruin that).
4) Learn to read music.
5) Try to keep the fitness I have from cycling round NZ (2 months to go, back in UK in March).
6) Oh yeah, get a job when I come back (please look after the economy until then!).

Happy new year by the way (it's 2012 already over here!).

1: Ride as much as I have this year (>10m / day on average)
2: Ride a long distance route in the UK - quite fancy the Trans Pennine Trail - Hull back to Liverpool maybe?
3: Yoga and weights at least once a week
4: Get (and stay) under 13 stone
5: Keep my chin up & head straight(er)

Here's to 2012. Happy New Year STWers. 🙂

1. Stay fit and healthy. No more CFS/PVF/ME or whatever it is/was, that can piss off for good!
2. Do the "teenage rebellion" I never did when I was younger. Already started this one, plan to continue and enjoy it some more! 😛
3. Ride my road bike more. I actually enjoy it every time I get out on it, but strangely struggle with the motivation to get on it.
4. Learn more natural trails. I've got a bit bored with either riding laps of a trail centre, or being led by other people. Last year started to take a stand, and made sure I learnt a couple of routes round my normal riding spot, and have furthered that slightly this year. But I want to get to the point where any one of say 6 or 8 riding spots near to where I live, I am the go to man to lead a ride. Don't know why, I just like it, perhaps it's cos it makes me feel useful, I don't know...
5. Be more selfish... Might sound crazy to a lot of people, but I know because I genuinely go out of my way for a lot of people I consider to be friends, they end up taking the piss cos it becomes the norm and they expect it. My ex GF, lovely as she was, I went out of my way right at the start of our relationship for her so much, that basically within a few weeks, it was expected of me to be her personal chauffeur for free, anywhere and everywhere, including to work and back (20 miles each way) before I went to work myself! I'm just gonna focus on looking after number 1, if my plans fit in with helping someone else out then fair enough, but otherwise I ain't going out of my way any more...

1) ride my bikes enough so that the cost/ride drops to a sensible amount. It's still in treble figures so far on the soda... 😳

2) get my climbing fitness back (strained tendons in my back last Feb and it all went to rat shit by June), lead HVS and 6b on sight, hopefully lead an E1 by any means!

3) get some more munros done, only managed 2 new ones last year (and only 4 or 5) outings in total.

4) sort out my general eating and exercise habits (the above should help!) to get the weight back under control.

5) stop buying stuff I don't really need or use sufficiently, spend more wisely and learn to live within my (reduced) means. I need to stop dipping in to the savings for non-essentials or it'll be frittered away before I know it.

And I haven't even got to the play my guitars more and regularly. They are not ornaments you know... 😳

Happy New Year Everyone 😀

1) No more new bikes (cunningly agreed terms on a new to me frame yesterday so that one doesn't count!)
2) Get into med school
3) Save lots of money for med school, number 1 might help that (and if I don't get in then I have lots of money for a new bike 😉 )
4) Work hard to get back on the bike properly, and record my miles for the year when I do
5) Improve my diet - less cakes/sugar/fizzy drinks etc.

Looking at all these makes my list seem so inadequate.

Mine was simply

1) Push my riding skills up a few notches.
2) Buy a couple of Kayaks and start kayaking.
3) Embrace my cynicism and accept that it's who I am.

Not really revolutionary but it'll do.

Not NY resolutions as such, but plans/ intentions

1/ Get out and do more in general
2/ Start riding my bikes again
3/ Get organised
4/ Remember how to enjoy life
5/ Ride the Way of the Roses cycle route

1-4 are all a depression thing, for the last few years I've been popping pills to control it but the down side of them is I have absolutely no inclination what so ever to do anything over than sleep and go to work, this year that will change

5 will show me I managed it

Not into new years resolutions but have a couple of goals for this year, since getting married in November to my partner of 18 years we have realised that we want to simplify our lives and get away from the stresses of work, etc. So:

1) buy a van and convert into a camper in the next few weeks,( anybody know of a good vw t5 or similar going)
2) ride more areas, lakes, peaks, quannies, etc
3) get out surfing every week
4) do more sportives
5) and most importantly spend more quality time with my family and friends

this reminds me of a paper/article (i can't find the link to) i read about declaring objectives to contemparies/otherS. the gists was stating the objective, "I'm going to ride 10,000 miles this year" etc, was self defeating. In summary those that kept the objective to themselves are much more likely to achive said objective than those that boast/proclaim their objective to others.

One or two more than five but here goes::::

1) Decide once and for all whether to retire from work when I reach 65
in March. (cant really afford to to be honest)
2) Pay off my credit card.(its already been cut up and my pension pot
will pay off the balance.)
3) Complete my 'bucket list'
4) Spend more time in the gym
5) Do more than the one sportive I've signed up for.
6) Have a real mountain bike holiday somewhere sunny.
7) Try to listen to my body so that I could possibly stop a third
heart attack. (I think four stents is quite enough). 😉

Quiet you! This is a little too close to the bone. Was in a relationship this time last year which bit the dust, in part due to (and via a slightly convoluted set of circumstances) the NZ CHristchurch earthquake. This time round my love interest has moved to Vancouver. No sooner had she arrived than they experienced a mild tremor, sufficient to shake their building slightly and scare the bejesus out of her... In short, I don't wish 'girls moving to other countries' and 'earthquakes' to become any more a feature of my relationships than they already have! 😕

All this talk of announcing intentions then not achieving them is also slightly close to the bone, I hope I've not jinxed myself! 8)

1 Get better at actually sticking to the lists I write.

Ride more (ride further afield regularly, ride more natural trails).
Eat & drink less.
Lose a bit of weight (the above two might be related).
Get back into 'serious' painting/photography.
(slightly further off the radar) Both me and Zoe find teaching jobs in a more 'bike (MTB) friendly' part of the country.

slainte 😳 rob

Sit down in front of a computer more. Become a big hitter. Submit to peer pressure and become a representative member of the STW community:

Ride my bikes less, pollute more, drink too much, get fat, become a lousy lover and get ditched by Madame, remove the insulation from my house and install central heating, stop doing anything with junior, buy an impractical but flashy car... .

My aim is to ride less.. cos I spent 2011 taking one step forward and two steps back by overworking a knee injury..

This horrendous task will be made infinitely easier as we'll be welcoming baby number 2 to the world in Feb.. and Mrs Yunki now has a half decent bike.. so I imagine that I will be spending some pleasant days bimbling around the countryside with my happy family..

Less is definitely going to be more for me this year

1. Try to beat the 4,000 miles of cycling done this year
2. Try to get slimmer - lost 1.5 stone this year
3. Try to find room to put all my clutter away in a very small flat
4. Try to stop smoking - again!
5. Try not to sound too desperate about finding a man - after all I've managed without one for many years.

Note all the above begin with "try" - I don't expect success in everything or indeed anything.

As we're roughly half way through the year now, I thought it would be interesting to revisit this. I said:

Less alcohol - fail
More sex - pass
Learn to meditate - not yet
Eat better - pass
Ride more - fail
