You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
The Orb are going to be live near me later this year but the most recent album I've listened to by them was Bicycles and Tricycles which didn't capture my imagination like their earlier stuff did.
Anyone seen them live recently, worth it for someone who doesn't know their recent output?
I also don't indulge in any of the same lifestyle choices that I used to back in those days either 😉
As they've got older they've got a bit rounder
Middle age comes to us all in the end
Who’s he with? Sound varies depending on who he’s bouncing stuff off. The Orb are like several bands really, with one member shared between them all.
You might see that in the desert.
Since Bikes+Trikes
Prism is good
Yarns from the chocolate triangle (as Chocolate Hills) is very good
The Heavens (as Sedibus) is really really good, up there in my favourite album of the last few years list, the first 3 tracks are tip top
Didn't much like Enter the Kettle (as OSS)
Abolition of the royal familia is good
The Lee Perry one is good.
So like Kelvin says, depends a bit who Alex is with. Tends to go in cycles too, at a peak right now imo.
Live I'm not sure, not seen them for ages. I'd go if local for sure.
Saw them last year in Exeter - excellent.
And saw Alex Paterson DJing (with various guests) at Beautiful days last year....that was excellent too. Basically it was an orb gig in everything but name.
Still got it 😎
It's Alex Paterson with Michael Rendall who I'm not familiar with. Will go take a dive on discogs.
Was going to say
Pink and fluffy.
Skimming through Prism is putting me off. Not niche/weird/mad/hard/raw/abstract enough for my tastes these days 🙂
Not that the Orb was ever all of those things, but was at least some of them, but Prism doesn't seem to be any of them. Not really "ambient with attitude" any more. I think that's what put me off about B&T, it seemed a random collection of random sub-genres and didn't really sound like The Orb.
No where near as much fun without a purple om.
The Heavens (as Sedibus) is really really good
Thanks for the heads-up; listening now. It really is awesome, every bit as good as the first two albums. Might go along and see them in Reading in November!
It would have to be a venue with very good sound. Like really loud. Otherwise all you'd hear all through the Orb's set is the middle-aged dorks talking about their Miele washing machines and who is babysitting Tarquin tonight.
I decided to go through their entire catalogue since UFOrb and compile a 'best of' because I find post UFOrb albums very hit and miss. Sadly I found a disappointing number of tunes to add to it.
Here it is (and I'm not conivnced all of these tunes deserve to be there): https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6cOc0qCquQy4tcbahKFj7p?si=9f092ab668f2455c
Seen them live a couple of times recently. Best was when Alex set the intro going, walked out into the crowd (a woodland setting), lay down beside me for 5 mins, then got up a knocked out a set of all their best known stuff. Worst was when they ignored the crowd, played a bunch of stuff no-one could latch on to, and pretty much didn't look up during the entire set.
