SOH has a Pixel phone thinking about a tablet for her, it'll be general browsing and the odd game. So was thinking an android based tablet maybe best for potential synchronicity with apps an her phone?

What are your thoughts/recommendations?

Nowt too big or too expensive!

My preference is iPad as it sits well with my iPhone.

If you're not going full iPad, Amazon Fire HD8 or HD10. Once you get to spending over £200 on a tablet you'd be daft not to get an iPad. I've had a HD8 for years, very easy to get on with, handy for travelling. Not a quick powerful processor, but that's what my laptop is for.

I have just bought a new tablet.

Was weighing up a few models; Lenovo M10 Plus (64Gb version), Samsung Tab A7, Samsung S6 Lite.

The Lenovo is a little older, apparently has just been given an Android 10 update, but loads of people online when I was looking were reporting it as not being available. My last phone was a Lenovo & it never received the promised upgrade it was supposed to get. This put me off the Lenovo, as Android 9 is already 2 behind the latest version.

Samsung tab A7 is new, comes with Android 10 & looks like it will be supported for a decent amount of time, from what I have read. Reviews seem to speak favourably of it.

Samsung tab S6 Lite - a bit more whizzy than the A7, with more memory & RAM. Comes with the S Pen, which might be useful depending on specific use case. For me, it's probably not going to get used a great deal, but nice to have.

I went for the S6 Lite over the Tab A7, as I was more confident it would run Zwift. If that hadn't been a concern I would have got the Tab A7.

I wanted to stay clear of the Amazon offerings, as it's more baked into an Amazon ecosystem, rather than pure Android. I know that this can be got around, but I really couldn't be bothered with the effort and I suspected it wouldn't play well with Zwift.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1" is about £179 currently (was £159 when I bought a couple of weeks ago), or you can get the 8" version for £109. Does me fine for browsing, emails, watching iPlayer etc

What relevance is your preference in a gift for someone else? If you were buying it for yourself I'd agree with you, makes most sense to stick with one ecosystem.

Besides which, you said "not too expensive" then immediately said you'd prefer one of the most expensive options in existence!

I've got a Huawei M5 8inch. It's very good but it's basically just a giant phone for doing non-call tasks. I do like it though. Ideal for watching films on trains/planes etc.

One thing about the Android tablets is that I find the aspect ratio a bit difficult on some websites and for reading eBooks/articles/docs. I find my wife's iPad mini much better for those tasks.

Essentially I was wondering how well Android units work across brands - is it going to be a ball ache to get photos, music, apps etc to sync between the phone (Pixel 3 I think) and a tablet?

Or should I forget that connectivity and get something I know works standalone?

An iPad 10.3 is pretty much the same price as Galaxy Tab S6 Lite, ok not the cheapest price bracket but acceptable.

It links to your Google account so it's easy. I can take photos on my phone and as soon as it's synch'd over WiFi they are available to view on my tablet

Just got a Samsung Tab A for the lad and can't complain. Only needed an 8 inch one so only about 100 quid. Ludicrous really.

Would have happily got a Lenovo m8 but at that price I didn't over think it and picked it up in a supermarket.
